Hello all,

I thought you might be interested in my latest piece of public service reportage for Deserter.

At vast physical expense to myself, I visited every Spoons with an SE postcode and lived to tell the tale.

As you will see, my favourites are not too far from East Dulwich. Are they yours too?

Yep, even in massive gardens like the Fox on the Hill where it would be easy to have a dog area. Seems a bit petty really, well-behaved dogs on leads wouldn't do any harm. From my experience of being a regular there and living opposite for a decade, humans got up to far worse in the garden after sundown than any self-respecting dog would!

Some are shite (Kentish Drovers I wouldn't drink in for free, seen a number of very nasty situations in there), some are OK (Fox garden a delight on a summer evening), beer nearly always reasonably kept and daft cheap. Yes they're owned by a total (redacted), but if you restrict your custom to public houses where the owners support remain, as do the brewers, you're in for quite a lot of sobriety.

Oh, and music is a massive part of my life, but I really like not having to listen to a barperson's/landlord's choice when I want a quiet jar!

Great article thanks. You could do it another day and get totally different results. Beer range can sometimes be great, and other times the dregs. But change from a fiver for three pints and many don't realise that you are only supposed to use the 50p tokens for one round, not every drink.

It kicked off at the Capitol years ago when they used to show football, and I've had a few dodgy experiences at the Fox including some lousy service. But other times perfectly fine. And the Capitol has custom from a massively wide demographic unlike many of the trendy new bars.

I avoided the Spoons like the plague many years ago, but maybe the low prices just wore me down. And agree that the owner is a complete rrrss and sadly even publicises his antics through his chain.

Go to the Capitol on open house and have a tour. Well worth it, such a lovely building and would make a lovely cinema.....

Don't like the owner but places like the Prince of Wales in Cardiff are good locations.

The Prince of Wales always has weird connotations for me - I grew up in Cardiff when it was the infamous porn cinema. The place your mum would hate walking in front of and would pull you along in case anyone in a mac would appear.

Having now been in the pub - that cinema must have been gigantic!

    • I went in here the other day. The fruit is all really good - ripe and fresh. They also sell good bread (and croissants and pastries) from a independent bakery, the name of which I've forgotten. 🤦 The prices (which are marked) are not cheap but they are fair imo. Comparable to the specialist fruit shop on Lordship Lane (Brothers?) for really good quality. It's similar prices to Simply Fresh - but Simply Fresh's fruit and veg is very poor. Beaten about and tasteless. Sainsbury's is certainly cheaper. IMVHO they're a good addition to the Dulwich Village "retail offer".
    • Went actually for the first time yesterday. Terrific food, so was well pleased. Agree with previous poster to support.
