Greetings book clubbers,

The pub walk was very good.

Thanks to everyone who came to see Cloud Atlas last Saturday which was a previous book.

Thanks to all who came to Mr Lui?s Chinese restaurant, a very good meal and a very pleasant day!

See you on the 20th, hope you are enjoying Mr Orwell.

Dear Book clubbers,

I recently went to an art project in central London. Two well known authors, Michel Faber & Mick Jackson, had recorded themselves reading one short story each which were then recorded onto a vinyl long playing record. Both the stories were excellent and well read, both very imaginative with a nice twist at the end. I have converted both to CD?s and if you would like one post me a message or email me and I will bring copies to the next meeting.

Hoots & Haggis,

Chick.

Greetings book clubbers,

Just a reminder our meeting is next Wednesday 20th in the Draught House.

I have had very little response to my offer of Michel Faber/Mick Jackson CD. If you want one let me know before the meeting.

I suggest we do the book giving on Saturday the 20th and have our next meeting on Wednesday 17th. We can discuss the book giving venue next week.

Bring your own razor blades.

I will do a phone round this week to see if there is any interest in seeing a film next Saturday at the Ritzy.

Hoots & hugs

Chick

Hi everybody,

Change of venue for next month, we are back at the Clockhouse. They have a room upstairs which is ideal for a book group. I have booked for the 17th April.

It was very good of The Draft House to accommodate us but the acoustics weren?t favourable for a book group discussion. A very big thanks to the Draft House for their hospitality.

I am looking into a possible visit to The Ritzy this Saturday.

Cheers

Chick.

The following message was sent to you via Reading Groups for Everyone (

Name: Holly Mia Simpson

Hello Chick,

I hope that you don\'t mind me contacting you. I work on the Channel 4 programme

Countdown and we are currently looking for contestants to take part on the show.

Hosted by Nick Hewer, with co-presenter Rachel Riley and resident dictionary

expert Susie Dent, Countdown was the first programme to be broadcast on Channel

4 and is one of the longest running game shows in the world, celebrating over 30

years and more than 5000 episodes.

As you run a reading group I wanted to contact you in the hope that yourself or

members of your group might be interested in applying to be a contestant on

Countdown.

If you think any of your members would be interested please let me know and I

can send you our application form. I am going to be holding auditions in the

London area on Friday 24th May so anybody interested can contact me directly.

Thank you in advance for your time and help,

Best wishes,

Holly Mia.

Hi newbie,

The next meeting is this coming Wednesday at the Clockhouse public house which is at the bottom of Barry Rd. We will be in the upstairs room, just ask the bar staff.

The event on 23rd is to do with World book night and you need tickets from the South Bank Centre. Go back several posts and you will see a link.

Can you come along next Wednesday? You?ll be made very welcome.

Chick

Greetings book clubbers,

Just a reminder of our next meeting this Wednesday at the Clockhouse in the upstairs room, 7.30- 8.00ish start. Any body had any thoughts on Countdown? Also I think we might consider the local author?s book which I wrote to you about. I?ll find out where we can buy it, perhaps we could read it some time in the summer, when it eventually arrives.

Hoots & harmony.

Chick

Greetings book clubbers,

Thanks to everyone who came along last night, another very good and lively meeting. Thanks to the Clockhouse for hosting us.

The next book is Middlesex by Jeffery Euginides.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2002/oct/05/featuresreviews.guardianreview15

The next meeting is Wednesday 22nd May, a bit of a way off but it?s a big book.

Thanks to Sarah & Bianca for some interesting histories.

Good reading.

The Wednesday night book club will be giving out books on behalf or World Book Night

At the Clockhouse on Saturday 20th April from 6.00pm.

The book is The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry

About the Book

Nearing her one-hundredth birthday, Roseanne McNulty faces an uncertain future, as the Roscommon Regional Mental hospital where she's spent the best part of her adult life prepares for closure. Over the weeks leading up to this upheaval, she talks often with her psychiatrist Dr Grene, and their relationship intensifies and complicates. Told through their respective journals, the story that emerges is at once shocking and deeply beautiful. Refracted through the haze of memory and retelling, Roseanne's story becomes an alternative, secret history of Ireland's changing character and the story of a life blighted by terrible mistreatment and ignorance, and yet marked still by love and passion and hope.

Greetings book clubbers,

Hope you are enjoying Middlesex. The next meeting is in The Clockhouse in the upstairs bar on 22nd May. It?s being used until 8.00pm so I suggest we meet at 8.15. Some of you have suggested the one big long table fragmented the group. The Clockhouse aren?t averse to us reorganising the tables to make two smaller groups of about six/seven as long as we put it back together. I would be grateful for your thoughts on this. I will check with Lisa as well.

Hoots & humbug.

Chick

PS please do let me know your thought/suggestions. Thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes of course. Don?t worry about buying Middlesex, just read a synopsis, it?s far too big to get through in two days.

Chick. PS We meet in the Clockhouse pub at the bottom of Barry Rd. We meet in their upstairs room. At 8.15

Hi All!

I've been in the are for nearly 2 years, but I'm really keen to join a book club. I was just wondering how often you meet? I've got plans for this Wednesday but I'd be really keen to come along to the next meeting if you'd be happy for me to join the club?

Thanks, Laura

Yes just come along and meet people. Chick

    • Good luck with this - there have been several requests over the years by students needing to do infant observations.  I was lucky when I did mine  - way back in 1994 at a local nursery. Have you tried contacting the NCT to see if there are any local groups who would be willing to participate? As a mother of 2 - found the observation very informative - mine was a 2 year old child as my course stated a child under 3. Got my highest grade for this project so was very happy.
    • Happy birthday! I've just read a bunch of your reviews and really enjoyed it. You write Interestingly without being too ornate, and you manage to give a really good insight into the "vibe" of a place as well as the food. Totally agree with your review of Rocca - it's simple, great food in a friendly atmosphere at a completely reasonable price, esp considering the location.
    • Hello,  I am a 52-year old mother and an integrative counsellor who lives and works in West Dulwich, SE21. In mid January I am starting a new training in Parent Infant Psychotherapy (helping parents to bond with their babies), and a key component of the course is a 24-month infant observation.  I’m looking for someone who will be giving birth ideally in January or February and who would allow me to observe their baby for one hour a week until the baby’s second birthday. The baby can be awake or asleep, playing, feeding, eating or interacting with carer/s and family members - whatever they normally do at that time.  The purpose of the observation is to enable me to gain a thorough knowledge of very early infant development and to develop the capacity to maintain an observationally minded and non-judgemental attitude in my work as an infant-parent psychotherapist.  I will provide enhanced DBS clearance and I’m happy to answer any questions.  Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested, email me at [email protected] or call me on 07949716043. I would be extremely grateful for any leads. Many thanks,  Millie  Millie Burton, MBACP Integrative Counsellor [email protected] millieburton.com
    • I keep my promises...had the Sweet & Sour Chicken.  It was great - the best sweet and sour dish I've ever had. The chicken itself was good and the sauce seemed home made with real vegetables and pineapple - it is NOT the red sugar sauce goo you get elsewhere.  The Korean fried chicken was very good but the sweet chili sauce was much more chili than sweet - just far too spicy for me. There is a honey something sauce that I will get next time. Egg fried veggie rice was good as a side.  We also ordered the chicken katsu curry which was polished off so quickly I didn't get to taste it. It looked very good tho. SD is not like Magic Wok used to be - cheap and filling but junk food. (Don't get me wrong - I went often to Magic Wok). SD's food is much higher quality, real ingredients, chunky portions, freshly prepared. I'll be back, for sure.
