Hi

Our little girl who is 5 years old has just been diagnosed with absent seizures (Petit Mal)> We have been told that we can medicate using Sodium Valproate but the side effects of this drug are just too scary. I know that there are risks with all medications but am finding it hard to contemplate medicating with such strong drugs. Has anyone else been in this situation or can anyone offer any advice please.

Regards

Catherine

My son had this, sodium valproate stopped the "absences" which was pretty important to him.

Fortunately, by the time he was 19 he found he didn't need to take the medication any more. This could happen to your child. For info, he was diagnosed at age 14 so took it for 5 years.

Hi catherine, epilepsy can leave children, my daughter had grande mal fits from 18months and they stopped when she was around 6, I did not use the medication as I had similar concerns. Is there any warning before the absences your daughter recognises. I know how difficult it can be to go against the doctors advice, but I felt it was important she understood what was happening. How regular is the absences and how long has she been having them? E dealer It must have been terrible for your sister growing up with no one recognising what was wrong, i hope the medication has turned things round for her.

Hi

Thanks for all your posts. Have been doing a lot of reading and there are lots of discussions and reports on deficiencies in Omega 3 and Magnesium being related to seizures. My little girl has about 5 or 6 a day lasting for just a few seconds, more frequently when very tired. People think she is daydreaming or not paying attention. At the moment we too hope she grows out of it which apparently many children do. If she was having Grand Mal seizures or developed fits then we would certainly reassess. Thanks it helps to know someone else has had such a dilemma.

    • It was indeed in the vicinity of DKH. I live on the ED estate and I could tell it must be close by because of the noise. When I left my house this morning I found the culprits litter still in the middle of the st. It looked like they had lit a whole box on fire in the middle of the road. My cat jumped out of her skin. I’ll try and report it on Southwark website same as I have had to with other illegal use this week. Any other ideas for what we can do with the photos? Maybe one of the Southwark councillors. It’s outrageous and dangerous behaviour.
    • Had another great meal there…. those that haven’t tried it, give it a go.. have a special lunch menu as well so you can get a flavour of the food.
    • If you "cotton on" and read the council announcement, it clearly states "The library will be closed from 17 November until late June or early July 2026."  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/2025/dulwich-library-closing-refurbishment
    • I’ve been seeing Lisa at goose green clinic for energy work for a year now.  Lisa is kind, caring and hugely supportive. She is wonderfully masterful and trained as a reiki master for 20 plus years. Alongside other energy work.  My time spent with her is like therapy. An emotional safe space for deep conversations and reflection followed by relaxing and energising healing work.  each experience I’ve had has been different, the end result remains the same. Feel lighter, almost euphoric and almost float home. Definitely an experience not to be missed.  https://www.goosegreenclinic.net/therapies/healing-energy-work/
