Just a warning to be careful walking along with your phone out.

My friend was mugged for her phone last night by the goose green playground at 6pm.

A man ran at her and grabbed her phone and ran off. She reported it to the police but they were disinterested. But just wanted to say be aware.

Thanks.

They advise us specifically not to text/walk but to stop, look around and use them against a building (if you text/tweet) - they are mobiles so people will use them outside.

The thing is they go at people who look vulnerable for some reason often - so the usual confident walk, know where you're going etc. applies.

Also avoid walking along the edge of the pavement with a phone held in the 'outside' hand - that's making a drive by grab that much easier. If you have to walk and talk, use a headphone and microphone and keep your phone in your pocket. Google maps (etc.) can talk directions if you're using it as a walking sat nav.

Another tip is to adopt a grip with your hand entirely around the back of the phone, including (importantly) wrapping the index finger over the top edge.

Not only does it make the phone less visible to someone casually looking out for people holding them out, it also reduces the chances a thief can get the phone by snatching at the top, as the normal snatch action will pin your index finger to the phone and give you the means to pull back.

Also make sure you have 'Find My iPhone' or 'Find my device' turned on - because although I wouldn't suggest chasing your phone across London, it allows you to remote wipe your data for peace of mind, and on many models prevents a thief activating a phone at all with a new SIM in it.

Well you can carry on imagining because 73% voted Remain in ED- so if you stick around here you'll be fine....(?)

I've noticed a difference already I'm sad to say - even in the liberal parts of London.

Heard a comment from someone on Saturday that I thought was left behind in the 80s.

Am sorry to hear about the mugging, people carry around their life on their phones, and the shock at being robbed can deeply affect you.

My wife has suffered racial abuse six times already this year, half of the occasions were in or close by ED. We thought the resurgence in public displays of racism fuelled by Brexit had gone away, but sadly not. Most of the instances were by other women and absolutely horrible. A woman sitting opposite her started speaking a mockery of Cantonese at her on the bus on Friday, when ignored she continued, getting even more aggressive when my wife politely told her that she's Japanese in fact and does speak perfect English. Makes me equally sad and angry that nobody else on the bus did anything.

Wow - it's hard to just ignore that kind of thing and carry on.

    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
    • I haven't used them myself but I noticed recently that "Snoots" in Forest Hill is going unlimited primary care for £33/month, so basically a subscription. Easy access on the 176 from East Dulwich. I have no idea what it includes so read the contract! It's a chain but only 5 branches so not a mega corporate. 🤷‍♂️ https://www.snootsvet.com/find-us
