This is quite a common thing. I've been offered Fish at the door a few times.

Would not dream of buying fish this way.

There have been cases where people end up buying a lot more fish than they could ever possibly store/ eat

Boxes and Boxes.

..and no guarantee of how fresh the stuff is or where it has come from..

I would be quite happy to buy fish at the door!

If it was a good price and looked/smelled fresh, I'd bung it in my chest freezer along with all the veg from my allotment!

Can't understand how anybody could buy "too much", though - surely you say how much you want and pay accordingly?! Or do they grab your wallet and shove all their boxes through your door, then scarper?

:))

Doesnt work always work like that..

There is no fish on show. You place an order and it turns up at a later date. Maybe the next day. ??

You then find every week more fish turns up and your account is Debited.

Cancelling the order is VERY Dificult.

I am not suggesting that the people calling in our area are involved in such a scheme but people need to be aware.

If you want Fresh Fish then go to F C Soper on Nunhead Lane

DulwichFox

Sopers is definitely the best local outlet for wet fish, but I have bought from these guys before (as a one-off, not a regular order) and they're fine - they van down from the North East and their fish is fresh (although, if it's from deep sea trawlers it will already have been frozen on board, so re-freezing might not be a good idea). I found that I wanted to give them a decent order, which meant I over-bought. Also I have no idea how much say, half a kilo of cod actually is. More than I needed, as it turned out!

And the baker. And the paraffin man. And the greengrocer. And the rag and bone man :)

The coalmen turned up every month back in the day - covered in dust - and as they swore when they carried huge bags of coal to the coal bunker round the back, my mother wouldn't allow me to speak to them :)

Perhaps he was trawling for business

    • Surely that depends on the amount.  It can be quite piffling.
    • Apparently a tourist tax was Raynor's idea, but Reeves has put the kibosh on it because of the push-back she'll get from businesses
    • But a larger number, in a more hotly contested election, didn't. It is an anomaly that Starmer won a landslide in seats with a turnout for Labour which would have shamed Labour leaders in all the 21st and much of the post war 20th century.
    • I was not suggesting anything else!   I'm not sure how you interpret what I said  as "irrelevant"? I was responding to a post saying that Corbyn was "unelectable". My point was that a  large number  of the electorate  voted for him!
