Weird noise at night - East Dulwich Grove

Did anyone hear a strange repetitive noise around 2am last night? It started at around 2am and lasted for around an hour. Was a strange noise alongside a motor running.

It's an ungodly sound and woke me in quite a panic when I first heard it

Yes and I have heard it before. No idea what it is.

It will be a track straightener. A huge huge machine dragged along the tracks by hydraulic arms. Sounds like a monster.

The noise came from the railway they were cleaning the rails, they do this every year about this time.
