Why is there a fireplace in the hall?

We recently looked at a 1930s semi in the area. There was a fireplace in the regular sized hall. It was tiled over and I don?t see how it could ever have functioned as a real fireplace given it?s against an external wall with no chimney! Zoopla shows a few houses of the same style with something similar. Could it have been for coal delivery once upon a time? Can?t find a single clue online.

sometimes theres a flue inside the wall which joins up with another flue.
