Hi all

Myself and my wife and 18 month old boy are thinking of moving to lovely east Dulwich next month. We have no childcare arranged. From a little bit of research it would appear that most cr?ches / nurseries have quite long waiting lists particularly for younger kids. Is this the case, and if so are we better researching Childminder?s for the time being until he gets A bit older? Thank you all in advance !

Hello! Yes, you?re right, lots of waiting lists but also often lots of movement. Things I would consider:

1) are you looking for full or part time and if part time can you be flexible with your days? If so many nurseries can accommodate quicker.

2) are you restricted geographically? (Ie do you know specifically where you want to move to and if so how far you?d be willing for the nursery run to be?). If yes, call the local relevant local nurseries to check out your options. If no, and willing to go a bit further (eg by car) options might be wider. For eg there is a newish nursery in camberwell you could consider.

3) would you consider a nanny share? Can be a good alternative to a childminder and more affordable than sole nanny and there are always lots of ppl locally looking for shares.

4) yes, childminder also a good option - many are like mini nurseries so you can get the best of both worlds.

That?s off the top of my head and I?m sure there are other options too. These things tend to work out one way or another if you put the effort in. We moved to ED without planning 5yrs ago and took a nursery place in our not first choice (which was fine but not perfect) for 6m before an offer at our favoured. We stayed there for a long time but have since also done preschool and nanny for additional children and all have worked well.

Good luck and feel free to pm xx

Thank you both very much. Carebear that was a great summary and reassuring. We are indeed flexible and that is an approach we may take with the nursery. But what I?m taking from this is that we need to get our lease sorted and then be flexible with our childcare options! Thanks again

Yes, I would research the childminder option. Southwark Council have a list of Registered Childminders and they offer the same services (the EYFS and more) as nurseries up until a child starts Reception.

I would ring around local nurseries, not all have as long waiting lists. I would recommend Mother Goose on Upland Road or Little Fingers Montessori on Barry Road. There are also some lovely local childminders, ring Southwark council and they can give you a list.

    • Thank goodness for Greg. I had an awful situation whereby I was notified that water was leaking from my flat into the flat below me. I was 150 miles away at the time and had a panicked journey home not knowing what I was going to face.   I called Greg (after seeing reviews on the forum) as soon as I arrived home in the evening and he arrived just after 10pm and was able to shut off the problem. He had to come back to finalise the job which turned out to be caused in a communal area whereby there was a blockage in the stack pipe.   Greg worked quickly, efficiently and informed me every step of the way as to what he was doing and why. He also cleaned up really well afterwards.  Greg's charges are very reasonable and he will definitely be my "go-to" if I have any other plumbing issues in the future.
    • Real Life was released in 1978. Yes it is a classic album.
    • Another recommendation for Nick. Copying below the review I have just left for him on Google: We don’t usually leave reviews for people online but are making an exception for Nick. He made fitted wardrobes for our loft conversion and did an absolutely fantastic job. The wardrobes are beautiful. Nick is passionate about producing a quality product, and also one that is bespoke to his clients’ needs. He guided us through the design to establish how we would actually use the space and built something that is fantastic. From start to finish the process was quick and each day he and his assistant Sean left the space tidy. I’m not sure we are easy people to please so the fact we are leaving a 5* review (indeed leaving a review at all) speaks volumes about what a great job Nick (and Sean) did. Nick also built a cupboard for our downstairs bathroom as part of the job and again it is brilliant. We would recommend them to anybody.
    • Just had a flatpack IKEA wardrobe put together by the dynamic Father & Son team (Victor & Carl) and over the years they have come to the rescue with their quality workmanship and all round great people to work with. https://www.handymaneastdulwich.co.uk Thank you once again.
