Kiera, I'm a member of the RSPB and I had no idea about that. I'm absolutely horrified.

I will definitely check out before I buy anything that it is harvested without harming birds.

Pleased to see that M&S olive oil is bird friendly, as that's what I'm using at the moment.

Thanks other posters for your suggestions. I really need to taste the oils first, I think, or I could end up having to use up load of stuff I don't like!

Thanks, that's very useful!

ETA: Just had a quick look. They only seemed to think the Waitrose one you mention plus the Tesco one if you couldn't afford that were any good!

The others were ranked quite low.

The M&S one they tested/tasted isn't the one I use currently.

Also found this while googling the Which report:

Oh that?s good news, I haven?t been there for a couple of weeks.

Greek olive for me from Kalamata

You can get a brand called Iliada from Sainsbury?s and it?s pretty good

The best I?ve ever had however is when I visit my friend in Athens. She had a massive drum of extra Virgin olive oil under her sink. It?s from her mother in law?s olive trees and really doesn?t get any better. I always bring some home. P

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Keira.

The Ethical Consumer has now produced a report naming those shops/brands which can or cannot guarantee their olive oils to be bird-friendly.

Of the supermarkets, Aldi, Asda, the Co-op, and Tesco could not guarantee this. Nor could Morrisons but they said that their initial inquiries indicated their oil is bird-friendly. The brand Napolina/Olivia (Princes Group)could not guarantee it (this is the only brand that was not able to).

The report says that in relation to those that could not make the guarantee, "these companies stated that any super-intensive nocturnal harvesting methods would be stopped before next harvesting season."

Marks and Spencer, Sainsburys and Waitrose all guaranteed their oils to be bird-friendly.

The report strongly recommends buying organic since it is unlikely that heavy machinery has been used as well as being more sustainable by excluding toxic pesticides and herbicides.

Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
