BEWARE OF SCAMMERS

For a couple of days now I have been getting an automated call

which tells me that my internet is going to be disconnected today.

It instructs me to press 1 on my keypad to resolve the problem

or press 2 to go ahead with the disconnection.

This will be a scam, whichever option you take (1 or 2) will

almost certainly connect you to a premium rate line

and very quickly cost you a lot of money.

The scammers will be operating from abroad, this will not be obvious

as they will be using a virtual telephone number that will make it look like they are phoning from the UK.

Also be aware that this number will keep changing slightly each time they try

to catch you out

So if you get a call like this don?t panic, your internet will not be disconnected,

just hang up or let it go to answer phone if you have one.

True.

Untrue.

"Phone Fraud ? Warning from the Police 11.5.05

"We have been advised of a telephone fraud currently in operation -this applies to home and work telephones, landlines and mobiles.

If you receive one of these calls, upon answering the telephone you will hear a recorded message congratulating you on winning an all expenses trip to an exotic location. You will then be asked to press 9 to hear further details. If you press 9 you will be connected to a premium rate line that costs approximately ?20 per minute."That's from https://www.hoax-slayer.net/premium-rate-phone-fraud-hoax/. See the Detailed Analysis further on for a debunking.

The key press will tell the system that a prospect has bitten on the bait. The system than redirects the call to some active connery, most likely a human con artist. Much as in this recent thread: https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,2037879. But your remedy, hanging up, is fine. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=71074524 has some useful advice on how to avoid being beguiled into making a premium call.

    • Wouldn't it make more sense to ask the guy who posted the rumours for the source of the information? The Crown & Greyhound refurb was a big job - not surprising that it took longer than just a simple repainting. But renovating the Grove would be even bigger because it's totally wrecked, and there's a shortage of skilled labour and much more expensive materials now...
    • Rather bizarrely, I received a text from TJ surgery offering this service. To be clear, no data was asked for in the text so I don't suspect a scam but surely this is dodgy? Where does my DNA info end up and who would have access? I'm going to the surgery on the invite date to ask precisely this.
    • I used Emmaus https://emmaus.org.uk/slc/ to clear my grandfathers house last year. They were great. They all charge for this service so will come and give you a quote first.
    • Hi, does anyone know of any charities or companies that can come and clear your house to be donated for a good cause? I know the British heart foundation does but wondering if there are others? We are moving overseas and hoping to donate most of our belongings in one swoop if we can! Thanks.
