meatmarket opens tomorrow (Fri) - don't expect it to be like Meatliquor tho which was sposed to resemble an american dive bar but ended up being more of a restaurant with huuuuge queues. the new place is sposed to be fast food only based on US style burgers rather than the very British style ones you can get at e.g. Byron.

serving hard shakes - alcoholic milk shakes and their new Black Palace Burger, supposedly modelled on that popular US chain..White Castle (!?)

Went to the draft house last night with the intention of eating, but the place still smelled of paint (not their fault of course) and the cramped, stuffy box of a room that they cram you into to eat felt almost institutional. We were willing to give it a go until we saw the menu and prices- a basic burger was over ?8, add cheese and chips and it comes out at over ?12. Considering a fantastic cheeseburger and chips at Honest Burger is ?7.50 and at Meatliquor about ?9, over ?12 is frankly taking the piss.

If the place itself had any atmosphere- the decor felt cheap and just cobbled together, but not in a good way, the prices would be more justifiable.

Shame really.

The Marmora family ate at the Draft House last night and enjoyed two good burgers, an average hot dog and an OK vietnamese chicken salad.

Agree on smell of paint - mildly off putting but the burgers were good, better than any I've had outside of Joe Allens, and so were the starters of baby back ribs & wingettes.

The atmosphere perked up nicely with good hum of noise that didn't mean having to shout to hold a conversation.

Agree - we felt we should have gone on Monday when Burger Night offer is Burger + chips + pint house lager - all ?9.75, which is a pretty good deal for a very good burger.

I work at Leicester Square and you can get a cheaper meal there than most of the so called Gastropubs in East Dulwich.

There was a time when feeling the pinch people would stop going to Town for a meal and eat Locally, All you save now is the bus fare! My prediction is that some East Dulwich Eateries will either see sense and cut their prices - or more likely go bust. As for take-aways Cheese on Toast on a motor bike for ?10 do they think we are mad?

I agree Central London Tourist Restaurants trend to be cr*p. It the only place where Pizza Express Waiters say hurry up choosing I do have other people to serve. (He didnt get a tip!) Oh and the other Memorable one was the waiter saying "The Chef would like to know what you ordered" !!

    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
    • Hear hear. Very well said. Thank you and all the best for the year ahead
    • Tried months ago, to get folk together to do something, to say thank you. Been a member of the forum for years and if you had not stepped up, would not be an active  forum. Well administered as well. So from me to you, thanks for keeping it going..  Happy Christmas and blessings and good fortune in 2026 which I am told is The Year of The Horse….
