a barge. On the Thames. With bells.

"The Queen's jubilee flotilla is to be led by an incredible belfry barge carrying eight enormous church bells which will peel out across London as the procession makes its way up the Thames.

Pushed along by a tug at about 6mph, the amazing vessel will herald the start of the Pageant, leading the flotilla as it makes its way from Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge.

Followed immediately behind by the Queen's barge Gloriana it will lead 1,000 boats down river with its bells ringing and churches along the route sounding their bells in reply."

We get to say 'Belfry Barge' as in "Have you seen the size of the bells on that Belfry Barge?"

...and/or discuss the current Belfry Barge and compare it with past Belfry Barges before learning that it is in fact a mere Herald Barge supposedly doing the job of a belfry and being thus known (informally) as a Belfry Barge...

...which will lead to wiki-ing it all out of sheer enthusiasm and excitement and discovering to votre horreur that- The word belfry comes from Old French berfrei which is derived from Germanic *bergan "to protect" and *frithuz "peace"; that is, it was originally a watch tower providing protection against hostile incursions. -and shaking our heads at the futility of it all and the laziness of Daily Mail sub-editors.

    • Two wrongs don't make a right. Labour ran on a manifesto of "we aren't like them" and "we are different" and"you can trust us/we will restore faith in politics". They are doing nothing to convince anyone that any of those promises are being met - they are letting everyone down. u-turning on everything and are fast-tracking the doomsday scenario of a Reform government. Even the runway on the "it's all the Tories fault" is running out. I dislike politicians because they cannot be trusted and Rayner just highlighted that with ribbons on. She should have been so careful after the focus on the electoral roll issues she had with the house in Ashton-under-Lyne and then under a year later this comes up. Clearly the advice she took included a recommendation to take proper advice that she failed to do - that's just daft and the most galling thing is that she didn't just resign when this came up - she tried to spin out of it but must have known she was toast. Trust is fast being eroded. I desperately want Labour and Starmer to fix this because the alternative it too scary to think about but the way things are going they are fast-tracking Farage into No.10. Labour are letting us all down.
    • Same can be said for the current and prior governments
    • Good afternoon, We are looking for a gardener to tidy up our climbing rose. It is very high, so the work will require someone with a tall ladder. can you please recommend anyone?  thanks s
    • So you are also old enough to remember the Heath Out protest by the TUC when unemployment hit 1 million? We all have selective memories, this thread is no different. Please give me a list of the Labour sleaze. And compare it to the Tories.  There are a few of you who appear to have a long term dislike of Labour, so all this is a gift.
