I've taken them through before, no problem at all. At worst you'll have to open one and sample it, but I've never had this. If they kick up a fuss explain how far you're travelling. I've also taken jars in the past, and there's no reason why they should be viewed any differently, it's all baby food.

Safe travels x

I've just flown on a long haul flight out of Heathrow and had to open half of the food I had with me, which was mainly Ella's pouches and milk in cartons. It was a total pain as we were struggling with two very grumpy kids and all their associated kit! At least with the Ella's pouches you can screw the lids back on after tasting a bit.

The officer at Heathrow made me open 3 precious cartons of Aptamil (precious as we can't buy it where we were going). We had to try and rip them open as we didn't have any scissors (not allowed to bring through, we thought) and pour them into our sterilised bottles. The officer saw how we were struggling and "helped" by unscrewing the lids of the bottles for us, unfortunately she then put the bottle lids with teats on the filthy counter. I couldn't bear to use the bottles when I saw that there were hairs stuck to the bottle screwtops. yuck.

Luckily I had also brought some disposable sterile bottles with me as a final worst case backup. But then spent flight anxious about whether I had enough bottles....

To be honest I may be making a bit of a drama about it but at the time it was a total nightmare! My littlest is 5 months so sterilising is not the biggest worry compared to a newborn say, but still... Aarrghhh.

argh katsuqueen that sounds awful!! how annoying. and how totally extreme of them - it's irritating that they are so inconsistent. I know in theory they can test 50% of what you take through but I'd have thought they'd appreciate at least the sterile bottles bit. As you say, sterility itself maybe not the issue but minging hairs stuck on bottle tops most definitely not on...

I've taken ella's on loads of flights without having to taste but I think that's because I've never thought to declare them, oops! I just reasoned to myself that they are weighed in grams rather than mls...

Just to be safe I've picked up some plum 100gm ones and I've booked in to the airpor lounge so I can fill his bottles with 4oz of boiling water which I'll let cool and then get the hosties fill up the remaining 2 with boiling and got myself a couple of slimline powder dispensers.

I thought I had packed light but I've got my carry on plus a large and small backpack that connect which I'll check but that has a combined weight of 27kg!!! If I haven't lost a few pounds after lugging that around for 3 weeks I'll give up and embrace the left over baby weight hahaha..

    • Dear families,   My name is Eleanor. I’ve worked in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for the past eight years, and I’m about to begin an Infant Observation course in preparation for psychotherapy training. I’m looking for a baby to observe as part of this training.   The observation involves me visiting a baby and their parent for one hour a week over two years, with the aim of deepening my understanding of early emotional and developmental processes. Taking part is a generous contribution to the training of future child psychotherapists — ultimately supporting the mental health of children and families.   Both of my own children were observed as babies, which I found to be a really positive experience. Having an observer gently witness my babies’ development helped me notice their weekly changes in a new way, and I came to appreciate the calm, consistent presence of a trained observer. I was sad when the observations ended!   If you — or someone you know — is expecting a baby due before the end of February*, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me at +44 7977 910018 or [email protected].   Best wishes, Eleanor
    • I rarely iron, so my massive ironing board is just taking up unnecessary space. Does anyone have one of those little ones that you can use on an ordinary table?
    • It's happened twice today, I've never had this happen before! Here's the second one. All I did was try to agree with a post in the lounge!
    • Now I'm having my hand slapped by some forum bot 😮 All I did was try to add a laughing emoji to ianr's post. This is obviously a message from the universe to tell me to get off my phone and get back to working my way through my very lengthy to do list 🤣 ETA: And it's just happened again when I tried to agree with a post in the lounge. OK universe, I give in. Back to the hideous task list.
