I know South London has always been rubbish compared to North for live music, but can anyone recommend any pubs / bars / venues where they have seen new original bands playing?

The Amersham Arms in New Cross was always a good one, but no idea if it still has live music, so if anyone has been there in the last year or so, that would be useful info.

Basically, in our new(ish) band, 3 out of 4 of us are SE London based, and it can be difficult to drag your mates over to North London to see you (especially when your mates are lazy swines like mine), so would really like to do something this side of the river.

Never heard of that one, cheers.

Windmill was the one that immediately sprang to mind, along with Amersham Arms and The Hob. Will be looking in to all of those.

Another idea might be to try and get a few bands together and split the cost of hiring a venue, then split door takings to cover outlay. Any other bands out there who might be up for that? I could definitely get us a night at The Half Moon, which has a nice set up.

The Hootenany has an amazing night on Fridays and Sat which is really Ska focussed but great atmosphere. I think they also won best live music pub award recently - they might be up for other bands outside of the Fri/Sat night thing.

I also had a really good night at the Golden Lion in Sydenham a few months back at their blues club - but they put bands on.

    • I'd try the Dulwich Village or "North Dulwich Triangle" forums for more local knowledge but I don't think those areas compare to Abeville Road at all. It will be quite a different lifestyle.
    • Yes, Dulwich Village commands a premium and justifiably so given access to the City via London Bridge plus the top rate schools within walking distance.  The bus services are really good also - 37, 42 and P4. The P4 is useful for connecting to the Victoria line at Brixton. It's worthwhile waiting for the right property. I know of one which will be coming on the market in a few weeks - 4 bedrooms and south facing garden circa £2.5m.
    • This is an utterly foolish and alarmist statement, completely at odds with reality.
    • I realise this is highly unlikely, but if anyone has a colour laser printer in very good working order, I'd be delighted to take it off your hands!
