There was a really good feature in the Guardian magazine last weekend about good online plant companies (the premise for the article being just your experience - lack of inspiration at garden centres). I can't remember off the top of my head the names of the companies but I'm sure someone in ED must have a copy of the magazine they can gve you. (I would give you mine but alas, I'm an ED Forum lurker and now live in Surrey!)

I think Crocus is actually one of the better ones. Thompson and Morgan etc. tend to sell small (plug) plants you have to repot and then plant once they are big enough.

B&Q has lots of plants at the moment and they are good sized. Not a vast selection but some nice stuff.

Depends a little on what you are after. Some online companies are very specialised (tropical plants etc) and they have lovely plants but are very pricey. Ebay and Amazon have plants too.

I've tried various, T&M, crocus, telegraph garden centre etc and never had the best results. Avoid homebase, B&Q etc.

I recently spent a small fortune in Shannon's garden centre in forest hill and it's all looking lovely-I was really impressed. I know you're wanting online suggestions but perhaps give Shannon's a try if you've not already?

It really depends what you're after, if you're looking for investment shrubs or trees then go online. Crocus is good to get inspiration from but expensive I find. If it's bedding plants then I've had some great bargains from your B&Q & Homebase type places.

For roses you can't beat David Austin http://www.davidaustinroses.com/english/Advanced.asp

For clematis try http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/ or http://www.taylorsclematis.co.uk/

I bought a fantastic Acer from here: http://www.rhododendrons.co.uk/ very good value I thought.

If you're after something specific, have at look at the specialist nurseries that show at places like Chelsea RHS and order directly from them.

Locally, the Secret Garden Centre in Crystal Palace behind Sainsburys has quite a good selection of plants.

best online plants i've received are from :

Guardian weekender article "Your plant's in the post" suggests:

Otter Farm Shop - former River Cottage gardener

Toby Buckland Nurseries - aka Gardeners World

Higgledy Garden

Shipton Bulbs - Welsh nursery

Hi,

Sorry to slightly hijack this thread, but I wondered if anyone on their garden centre travels happened to have come across a largeish Marguerite tree? I've looked in B&Q, Homebase and Dulwich Garden Centre to no avail. Need to replace one I managed to destroy last year, as part of a matching pair in pots. I was falling over them last year, but there seems a mysterious absence so far this year and therefore a rather gaping hole on our roof terrace.

Thank you

    • Just a quick post to say that my restaurant reviews column is now one year old. There are 45 reviews here* - mostly of local places (some sadly now defunct, others thriving). There are a couple of recipes from a period when I couldn't afford to eat out, a couple of moans about my health when I couldn't eat out on doctor's orders and a couple of reviews beyond our manor. But the main thing is that it is a free, useful guide to local dining and, I hope, an entertaining read. You can, of course, pay to subscribe or follow for free to get the reviews directly into your inbox as I don't want to spam EDF with every review (doctor says I'm not allowed spam anyway). The pictures below come from my two most popular reviews - Persepolis (new SE22 spin-off opening soon) and Norbert's, a great addition to East Dulwich. Please have a read and please consider subscribing. Did I mention you can subscribe for free?   https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/  *It would have been 46 but one review didn't run because the meal was so disappointing. I try not to be negative. To paraphrase Boyzone (or is it Westlife?) I said it best by saying nothing at all.
    • I'd like to recommend Andy - came out very last minute to help us with a rental property that was having plumbing issues. We couldn't source the problem but Andy was able to find it / fix it easily & took the stress out of the problem. We have booked him again to put in a new bath for us now too as we were so happy with this work.    Lovely fella - thoroughly recommend using! Andy's number is 07983 688 451
    • If you're looking for a reasonably priced gym, there are a couple of PureGyms not too far away in Camberwell and Peckham. They're less than £20 a month with no joining fee. If you're looking to get fitter and / or lose weight, and you don't have any mobility issues, then download the coach to 5k app and start running. It's by far the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to improve your cardiovascular fitness and it's great for clearing your head!
