William Birch Birchcraft iconic solid oak captain?s chair fitted with the top quality Hillcrest tilt, rise and swivel mechanism, all original castors, all original maker?s marks, requires some slat strengthening and new upholstery only. The Birchcraft range was produced between 1950 and 1954 by W Birch & Co. From Grace?s Guide to British Industrial History: "William Birch was a furniture maker who started manufacturing chairs in High Wycombe in around 1840. By the 1890s Birch was supplying furniture to Liberty and other prestigious London stores?pioneered the development of arts and crafts furniture locally, and employed well-known designers such as E G Punnett, George Walton (who worked with Mackintosh) and Whitehead. They produced the Birchcraft range in the early 1950's until they were taken over in 1954 by E G Gomme (who the year before launched the hugely successful G-Plan range of furniture)." ?150, collection only, Forest Hill
