Warning

There is a young man, age approx 10-12, and his younger sister, age approx 8-10, visiting houses in the area with a sponsor form from Honor Oak Amateur Boxing Club, claiming that he is raising money for the club by doing a 5 mile run. He visited my house last night and my partner checked with the club's secretary, John Atkinson, who gave her a description of the boy and told her that he has been using the form to extort money from generous homeowners since last August. Both the children are white, the boy has short cropped mousey hair, the girl has long straight brown hair, and their most distinctive feature is their noses; they have both been born without fully developed noses. Do not allow your empathy for these children persuade you to give them money up front, looking at the form I would say the young man earnt more in an hour than your average teacher, and it doesn't go to the club, and I doubt that these children get to keep the money either. My partner took the form from the boy so that he could not defraud our neighbours, but it was obviously photocopied, so he'll be out with another one soon. She didn't think to take a picture of him at the time, which would have been useful. The police have been informed.

when i lived in west London this kind of thing happened alot in the indian community. In large indian cities it isn't unheard of for beggars to deliberately mutilate themselves to attract sympathy, and thus more money. Sounds like these kids are doing this on behalf of a gang on account of their reported age. Adults who force kids to do this kind of thing (regardless of their disfigurement9 should feel the full force of the law and go to prison for a very long time.

This makes me so sad. Anyone who knows these kids and where they live should be informing social services, or as suggested NSPCC, so that their welfare can be checked on etc. they're just kids so they are either being coerced into this or they have very little and see this as a way of gaining something for themselves. It's not right but they might need some help.

    • Unless you are watching it 24x7 then its hard to qualify that its not being used. Unless you are a business overlooking it of course. Personally I am reassured we still have phone boxes as they provide a valuable emergency use. If you are mugged for you phone, you can call 999 from them, if your house or business is on fire and you run out without a phone you can dial 999 from them. Some people don't have a mobile so its potentially reassuring for them knowing they can call someone if they feel unwell whilst out.  Just because some people don't see value in an object, doesn't mean others don't.
    • Hardly a non-story @malumbu still one of the lead stories on the BBC.....you clearly don't understand when to serve humble pie! 😉  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgk40l8jm7o   Absolutely. It's a disaster. And for this government, who were happy to tell us they had 14 years to prepare to lead, it has been one self-inflicted disaster after another since they took over. To be honest the signs were there when they were in opposition but I think we all gave them the benefit of the doubt as they weren't the Tories and now they have the reigns the additional scrutiny that brings is tripping them up.
    • I don't think I've ever seen it used other than for gluing advertising on it. It's definitely not a priority but these things typically get ignored and become part of the furniture (so to speak).  There is a beautiful old red box near Upland Rd. I miss old red boxes... 😞 Anyway I'll have a dig around and see if anything can be done.
    • £30-40 for M&S Christmas food for two seems very low! And only £60 for food and drink for 8-10 people?  We have had M&S food at Christmas in the past, and it came to a lot more than that. I suppose it depends exactly what you are buying. We left it late to book a Christmas Day meal out last year, so there weren't many options left.  The Cherry Tree menu looked very nice. That was our first mistake. We also overlooked the fact that it was a Young's pub, with all that implies about the food. That was our second mistake. We don't have shedloads of money. We  took the view that we deserved a nice meal  out after working bloody hard all year. So it was doubly disappointing to basically waste a lot of money which could have been very much better  spent elsewhere.
