Children's bedroom hand painted murals

Recommended Posts

Hi there, just getting an early feel if there would be any interest from parents wanting/interested in having their children's walls decorated with cartoon style pictures. I will include a few pictures of walls that I have done in the past. Parents and children can give an idea of things that they are into e.g. Animals, boats, cars, sealife etc and I would come up with a sketch and if you are happy with it I could paint it onto their walls. Choldren can even paint their own pictures and they could be transferred onto the wall. I use a projector to transfer the pictures onto the walls and then paint using tester pot colours. Haven't gone far enough into it to think about prices yet as I have only done it on family members walls but I just wanted to see if it would be viable part time work as I am a stay at home mum. Ideas/comments welcome.

Great idea but as always comes down to cost. I suppose that depends on your time. If you have to go and look at everything it will end up quite expensive. Would you have a range of off the peg ideas that customers could just click on as it were? Those wanting a tailormade service with images of relatives or favourite toys or whatever could have special consultations and separate fee scheme, perhaps?

Thanks for your thoughts dulwichgirl2. I am not and do not profess to be an artist nor do i have any qualifications so i would not be charging extortionate rates. It is just a hobby that i quite enjoy doing, so far just for friends and family. It is hand painted, so as such would not be without imperfections. Depending on the scale of the design it usually takes about 2 days work. i wouldnt charge for consultation as such, just the labour and materials and as i only use tester pots (only about ?2 each) the cost is not high. It is still early days, and maybe wont come to fruition, but i just wanted to see if there would be any call for it in the area. I am a single mum, so would be fitting it around my 13 month old so would be a small scale venture!

I think it is a great idea and love the egs, especially the giraffe. I think if you could scale it, and get some efficiency in terms of product, it could be a great way to make some extra money part time.

One thought - as the baby and child stages are sadly so short, would you do it such that the customer could paint or paper over the images quite easily?

Thanks for the positive feedback! The paints I use are just emulsion tester pots so as such can be covered with two coats of white emulsion. I am very open to ideas and suggestions as I am obviously very new to the whole business side of it but was wondering whether a flat per day might be the way to go.

The only thing I would say is you can get vinyl wall decals which look similar, they are probably cheaper and also easy to remove when you change your mind. Sorry to put a downer on it, there may be people that will pay extra for something done by hand, but for something like this I wouldn't myself.

Thanks Pebbles. As I said, any theme would be possible. An initial meeting(free) would allow me to collect your preferences, ideas, input from children. I would then go off and make a sketch which you would then approve and we would arrange a day for me to come in and do it. But it's still at the idea stage at the moment. I'm just trying to garner whether there would be enough interest to make it a viable option. Thanks again for your positivity!

I think it is a fab idea, my aunty is an artist so has offered to do one for us, but I think you should do a few ads (with photos )and put up in say Dulwich library, library on Grove Vale, and maybe leaflets in the park cafe and local cafes. Excellent idea for working from home. Good luck with that!

    • A diamond and emerald pendant has come off my necklace either in Goose Green playground or between there and Bellenden rd. It was a wedding anniversary present for my late grandmother from my grandfather so very sentimental. Please contact me if found. Thanks, Kate
    • I would highly recommend Gary. He was prompt efficient and reliable.
    • Wouldn't be a bad idea and would be beneficial to all road users. More so with Boris/hire bikes i do see some awful and stupidly dangerous  manoeuvr'es taken by the riders. I travel lots by bus and take the front seat upstairs when possible which gives one a great view. Have to say that i witness some awful risk taking by cyclists as well as little regard for the highway code which i think all road cyclists should be proficient in. If a moped user has to have passed a test to get on the road then i don't see why cyclist shouldn't either. It would be for everyone's benefit and certainly for the cyclists who are very much the more vulnerable when up against huge lumps of metal.   On the same tack i do think there should be some way that mobile devices are automatically disabled when in a moving vehicle. Form my view from the front of the bus it's very common to see drivers with there phones on laps and tapping or scrolling away one handed whilst there vehicle is moving. They're a terrible distraction and hard to put down for many. For balance i'd suggest the same for the cyclists that can cycle hands free while texting away. It's quite some skill but not so impressive when you see how vulnerable they leave themselves.
