Banning things never seems to go out of fashion. However, fashions change and stuff rightly gets banned.

I still remember being in a pub or a restaurant and people lighting up a cigarette as if it was completely ok. Thankfully we?re living in a more enlightened time for the best part, but there are still things on our collective radar.

Vaping

Horse racing

On line gambling

Betting shops

All my personal pipe dreams for a general banning, with luck I can realistically see Vaping having its day sometime in the future.

But here?s a platform to air your views, though try to stick to your subject, as a list is tedious to read, even more so to engage with.

There?s a whole range of subjects in the arena, from Cars to Foie Gras, Electric Scooters to Fake News

So here we go, knock yourselves out.

It has to be proportionate and achievable, and not with unintended consequences such as being driven underground. Prohibition anyone?

So we could ban lots of things but who is going to enforce it - and anything that alienates the masses aint going to happen (20mph zones?). It's all about making money isn't it? Society has to change. Blame Corbyn and/or Thatcher.

I love the classic interview in the street "I hate government as they tell us what to do" And what do you want government to do? "oh they should ban x y and z".

To return to your questions. Betting. A tenner on a nice time out. Whats the issue? It's entertainment. When it goes beyond entertainment....

So when we say ban the question is why and how?

Please don't ban vaping - at least not until the smoking of cigarettes belongs firmly in history. Vaping has an important role for the time being, especially in the UK where we have superb quality controls:

How about banning people who hover in the middle lane (a.k.a. the overtaking lane) on the motorway from driving - forever!

And spitting on the pavement should be properly banned, if it isn't already, certainly seems not to be.

4x4s in East Dulwich should be banned, with zest.

If I was in charge I'd also ban Philip Green.

There was a very lovely science fiction book written based partially on the concept of a totalitarian state where everything was banned , the anti sex league were against joy, thought police watched your every move and history was rewritten on a daily basis.

There was another one written where books were banned and burned to stop dangerous ideas and unhappy concepts.

Are we advocates of this sort of future for the citizens of East Dulwich ?

Guy Montag and Winston Smith may disagree with banning things !

Do you mean 1984?

That wasn't science fiction!

I realise you've just googled Science Fiction and extracted that from a much longer definition, but have you actually read the book?

As the book was published in 1949 and predicted the future it is placed in the class of books known as Science Fiction 😎

Yes .. I have read the book.. 1984

.. and Animal Farm (at School)

1984 about people living in a Dystopia

Animal Farm is about the 'Birth' of a Dystopia and how it comes about.

There is NOTHING Original that can be said or written about that is 'Non Google-able' Made that word up..

Did not need to Google 'Science Fiction'

For Fox Sake

The book burning one is Fahrenheit 451. Brave New World is a must read- the Deltas are an interesting group...

Minority Report film based on a book by Philip K Dick is about how the police preempt crimes using psychics...

Paving over gardens in cities should be banned

I'm not sure the O.P. was referring to Banning certain types from the Forum.

More about things to Ban in general.

I am Not a smoker but find Vaping more offensive than smoking .. even outside,

where Vapers insist on creating the largest Plume of Vapour they can and blow it

indiscriminately in any direction with no consideration for others.

Grrrrrh

I'm okay in general with vaping even though someone blew the vape smoke in my face once - 70s throwback :)

Whats happening with the deaths in the states though - thats scary (is it what they vape).

There's no "vape smoke" with vaping - it's just vapour and no smoke. And yes the problems in the U.S. haven't been proven elsewhere yet - likely due to illicit and THC juices being used.

How about circumcision - for girls and boys alike. Unless there's a genuine medical reason for it. Genital mutilation of children M should be banned whether it's FGM or MGM.

I would like to ban people who stand head down, texting, in segregated bike lanes. Where did people use to stand and text before the segregated bike lane was introduced?

I would also like to, maybe not ban, but heavily discourage / tax 4X4s in urban areas. Totally unnecessary and dangerous.

Agreed x2

Absolutely agree. SUV?s have no place in our inner cities. Usually driven by entitled wealthy incomers, who drive them recklessly as though they?re on a racing track. God only knows the amount of pollution they give off. Makes me laugh when certain posters on here complain about dog poo, you might want to look at the toxic smoke being kicked out by SUv?s as a first priority towards harming yours and your family?s health.

Louisa.

What's wrong with "incomers" ? Sounds slightly xenophobic to me. I do hope that you're new neighbours in Sidcup (or where ever you move to) are equally welcoming.

The plume of vapour is propylene glycol- the same stuff people use on stage for smoke effects.

Theatre 'Smoke' can Hang in the air for many minutes..

    • a - you said you were done interacting with me, remember b - " police, judge, jury, prosecution and executioner"  - the not very bright person's response on any public forum when someone point out the idiocy of anything. I haven't prosecuted anyone, executed anyone, or taken part in any trial or jury.    I have judged tho but then so do you and so did the OP - so what?
    • And when did you become the police, judge, jury, prosecution and executioner all in one, I don't think so. And get back to Lewes
    • Yes, it is just that the local demographic is soon to have a large shift and more late night shopping catering for student needs is likely to be very popular. Presumably the massive student lodgings development plans for Melbourne Grove will have catalysed the Londis application. Wasn't there also an application for a late night bar or club at some point round there? Still, all this will help turn Melbourne Grove North into a real 'vibrant, urban destination' and 'town centre' and, for sure, we can expect lots and lots of e- bikes and scooters to be 'parked' around the place. What makes me laugh is that not so long ago the smaller housing development in the same place was being marketed as wonderful select family homes in quiet, leafy MG, with a 'villagey' feel.  As a taster for where all this might lead, has anyone noticed the crumbling brick facing on the railway development, built not so long ago? You throw 'em up and they soon start falling down. The developers make loadsa money and Councillors get to tick their boxes.
    • Stereotypes are based on actual real behaviours.  They can be inappropriately applied to a whole group and can overstep the mark, potentially being offensive.  But comments made on Corbyn and some of his followers are often accurate.  That's not saying he didn't have some good policies, often picked up by the large parties, and is not principled.  I saw him many years ago at an event celebrating Tony Benn where he was excellent.  Perfect for a back bencher. The damage caused by his Brexit stance is difficult to reverse, even ignoring the vote and the outcome, there could have been cross party working and agreement of taking it forward.  And being an apologist for Russia is just ridiculous.
