Lordy. Not content with failing to award academic merit in children, local schools are now handing out "participation medals" in running.

What absolute b.s. and an action that does the great runners and the rubbish ones alike, a dis-service.

How did this dumbing down infilitrate our society? Was it Blair?

I don't think that the children are fooled by this type of political/sociological/psychological correctness. Sitting on a bus I overheard a conversation between 2 girls in their early teens. They were talking about someone they knew who had achieved a GNVQ. One girl asked what GNVQ stood for and the other said 'generally not very qualified'.
(Why the apology SJ?) GNVQ have been replaced by BTEC now- even less rigorous and Michael Gove is addressing this. I don't know what BTEC could stand for but I'm sure I could think something up if I put my mind to it. The participation medals in the OP could have been influenced by the Marathon. Presumably the children have to complete the race, jump etc.

No - you just have to start the race, or at very least show up at the start line.

These days, it's not about the winning, its about the taking start.
