Not just Daddies sauce or Lea & Perrins.

Here's my current dalliance, found it a 'Masalamart' on the Charlton wholesale estate, SE7.

It's a pickle sold in Burma made with bamboo shoots, seriously spicey, but flavoursome and crunchy.

This is a copy (made in London) but it's a good copy, IMO as good as the real stuff.

Isn't there something 'special' you keep in the larder as a treat ?

SMB sell it too

Shito!

Gotta try this Shito, sounds like it's a plain no-messing 'hot bastardos' chilli-based sauce.

For mental hotness (or whatever the term is for super chilli heat grading), I think this one has a reputation, certainly one to mix in tiny amounts when making marinades etc and it will hurt you if you take it in same quantities you'd eat (say) mustard.

I got it a couple of years ago at a stall at Goose Green fair, I immediately put it on some jerk chicken I'd just got from another stall and had an instant refresher lesson in how dangerous chillis can be !

It's a swine. Play with it at all, then not wash your hands properly and scratch your eye, you know about it soon enough...

The bloke with the stall at Goose Green said he'd researched the subject, travelled a bit in the process and reckoned he'd made the hottest sauce on Earth. Once you get into these realms of spiciness it's all about (reducing) the pain.

Not a condiment to have sprung on you / involuntarily, on the contrary, it should come with a training course for H&S reasons !

Earlier I was oing to add a similar comment like is it some man/macho thing, fave sauces are always spicy ?!

I have a bottle of the hottet stuff on Earth but I'm scared to touch the bottle without scrubbing my hands vigorously afterwards !

It's an OK talking point but not at front of the jars in my larder, meanwhile I get through other jars at some pace, chief of which is currently the Burmese gear above.

There is a curry, the Phal, which was only available in one curry house in my hometown, it was hotter than Vindaloo and this is where people would contest the who's hardest at curry-eating every year or so !

It has an unusual taste I agree - hefty level of chilli but tempered with a kind of smokey, fishy flavour. We've used it as an accompaniment, in spicy dishes and also spread (thinly!) on crackers. Scrumptious.

I am not into uber hot 'insanity sauce ' type condiments but Shito manages to combine heat with taste.

    • Fair enough point, but does that not in a way make it even worse if they open a shop almost directly  opposite another "family" business selling exactly the same type of products?
    • As Occado source from Waitrose, and were their only deliverer at one stage, and as Waitrose do now deliver it may be they feel their reach in ED is sufficient to mean having a local outlet would not gain them sufficient additional sales to be cost effective. The movement to delivery rather than physical shopping during Covid has I believe substantially changed the grocery economics. So it may be that the High Street dynamic for physical shops has now changed.
    • ..... thinking about the discussion about Chango.  Their "About us" blurb on the website says started by one Argentina guy.  So if one person has a successful business and goes on to open a number of shops when do they go from a supported successful "family" business to a less liked "chain"?
    • I used to buy a brand of olive oil called 'Il Casolare'. It was unfiltered, often on offer in Sainsbury's and came in a really nice bottle with a stopper. When it was finished, I'd soak the label off, fill it with Morrison's own-brand vermouth and use it for cooking as it lasts longer than keeping wine open. One night there was very little else left to drink, so we got into it - I told people it was a difficult to find artisanal brand I'd brought back from Barcelona and that it should be pronounced 'Vermut'. People loved it. I gave away a couple of bottles as Christmas presents the next year.
