Delia's all-in-one victoria sponge always a winner for us as nice and moist and so easy to make and scale up if needed. Chocolate version with chocolate fudge icing is great for kids....although messy maybe for a 1 year old!

Depends maybe whether you're making it for the kids or the parents? It can be soul destroying to make a nice one and then see kids smearing it everywhere and leaving it after one bite. Hence Delia for kids cakes and something nicer if it's for adults.

I think the cook shop on LL hire out number cake tins. Just make sure you prepare them well with butter and flour to help the cake come out easily - although again, seldom have trouble with Delia's recipe.

Simple Madeira cake is best four birthday cakes I've found for birthday cakes, fairy cakes etc

So just use the 6oz butter, 6oz sr flour, 6oz caster sugar to 3 egg ratio ... Can go up or down in ratios ie 8,8,8,4 or 2,2,2,1 ... I like to add lemon zest or good vanilla essence

This cake keeps, freezes and takes icing well

Hi,

For my little girls 1st birthday, I made a chocolate cake from recipe supposed to be for cup cakes. I made a hungry catepillar - the body from cupcake (handy to give out as people are leaving) and for the head I used a round cake tin, but shaped it after cooking.

I can pass on recipe and pics of cake if of any interest.

Hope you have a lovely time celebrating.

Try this quick easy recipe and adapt it using loaf tinx2 or use one twice, you can cut and assemble to a number1 shape slice in half and fill with choc fudge and cover all over with rest of choc fudge then put sprinkles and decorations of your choice over the whole thing. I did it for my son's 7th b'day, it was fab!

    • Let's not forget this is the lowest level of local politics. If McCash really thought his defection could trash the Labour Party nationally, and it was loaded with invective and exhibitionism, then that's pretty much the definition of a "hissy fit"! Scooping the Green nomination for DaWN constituency is also going to be a lot harder for a Marxist arriviste than you suggest. There may be a wave of new, younger Polanski-ites that have joined the Green Party of E&W recently, but it's the long-standing, often retired members of the Party that tend to participate in candidate interview panels and bother voting in selections...
    • They've had 26 years or so of trading, and if anyone deserves decent retirement... In my view they're going out at the top. It's clearly being sold, assuming it all goes through as a very more more than just a going concern.
    • I had heard this was on the cards a while ago, sad, the end of an era, but well done Rod and Tim for stewarding a beacon of excellence for so many years.
    • Both your hopes will be fine, I think. Our waitress will stay on. The downstairs is getting refurbished, and the bar area enlarged, presumably by removing that awkward little 'lobby' by the loos.
