Rubbing a bit of washing up liquid into the stain before putting into machine can sometimes do the trick.

Would agree about hanging out clothes in the sunlight as stains do disappear after hanging out on the washing line in hot sunlight (got that from an elderly neighbour).

Weirdly, I've had sunlight worsen stains on some white/light clothing. Does anyone know why that happened? I thought maybe the sunlight oxidised something in the stain, effectively causing the stain to set. It hasn't happened enough times to draw any conclusion about what might have been the cause.

Saffron, yes presumably oxidation.

I am giving up my short low temp eco friendly washes. They just don't get things clean enough.

I recently got terrible grass and mud out of a lovely white dress by soaking in Vanish overnight, making a little paste, machine washing and then repeating as only half came out the first time.

A lot of the stain remover formulas say they work in one application, but really I've found many stains need re-treating in practice.

In theory, oxygenated bleaches should help with oxidised stains, but in practice I've found that they can also remove colour from children's clothing. As it turns out, a lot of children's clothing is dyed with vegetable-based dyes. So you can remove the stain, but also damage the colour content of the fabric! Ah, we live and learn, eh?

I have a hypothesis that rust remover should help remove banana stains (oxidised potassium stain?), but I've never had a bottle of rust remover around when I needed to test this.

Sometimes soaking the stained area in fabric conditioner, washing thoroughly with liquid dish soap, and completely rinsing the fabric before applying stain remover helps. This 2-step process helps remove oily residues which prevent stain remover penetrating the stain.

    • Really interesting discussion here. It's difficult to respect the views of people who support Farage, Trump, Musk etc. Why should we, when their views are deplorable. But then that exact 'deplorable' label, as we know, is counterproductive and drives people to double down / switch off to more progressive views. How do you actually help change minds? We're currently spiralling into dark places culturally and politically imo. The amount of open racism, even amongst front line politicians here and in the US is astounding to me. Feels like we're going backwards. The influence of social media and the tech billionaires / bros, is a powerful and largely malignant one. There was an enlightening (and frightening) bit of journalism by Sky this week about Musk's influence on British politics. He has a strange obsession with the UK and London in particular (as do many on the US right wing): https://news.sky.com/story/the-x-effect-how-elon-musk-is-boosting-the-british-right-13464487

    • I'm going to Paris with friends, staying in the 3rd arrondissement. I used to go a lot but that was ages ago so wondered if anyone has any 'insider tips'? We are interested in small art galleries, independent shops, good value cafes and restaurants that may not feature in all the many online articles or guides, thanks!
