Hugu, you are much lucky if you live so nearby to visit that often. I havent even been to Veitnam once as yet! But i have been hearing alot about it being an amazing holiday destination, a mix of relaxing and adventurous vacation destination, so ill definitely be visiting there soon. Have you tried the Halong Bay crusies? Any specifics you recommend?

so did gary glitter.

That really unpleasant side to your rather slimy personality sneaks out very now and then doesn't it, Woodrot.

It's sour racist misogyny, where every Asian girl is a dirty hooker.

You can't get over your sneering, yet even as you say it, you regret it. You're aware that your behaviour and attitude is shameful and pathetic. You know you've soiled yourself.

I'm sorry you hang out with nasty people, it says more about you than Asia.

You're a sad small man, we all get it.

If you stop saying nasty things, you may start to be happy and proud of yourself. Try it.

tsk tsk tsk

3/10

Ignore 1000s of backpackers on their way out, or returning from on their gap year or post-graduation year, or doing a round the world.

Vietnam is sadly tourism by numbers nowadays (as in go through the list of tourist traps and book the tour).

Surely Bali is now full. Islands to the East quieter.

Sri Lanka is hopefully not quite yet over run by tourists - particularly if you go East or North

India is big enough that you can escape the hords.

Can't see the point of the Maldives.

That's not really fair.

Vietnam has a few package holiday venues, but mostly if you book hotels over the internet and rock up you'll have a great time away from the hordes.

Likewise in Bali, Seminyak and Kuta are the Ibiza of Australia, but the west coast and mountains are really enjoyable.

In India you'll be part of the crowd at the Taj Mahal, but if you get yourself a hotel in Delhi and rent a car and driver for 10 days you'll be able to do an incredible self guided tour of Rajahstan, staying in great havelis, that'll blow you away :)

The Maldives are like any other well heeled resort. It's got private villas, glass bottomed boats and 5 star restaurants. If you like that kind of thing you'll love it.

It's not realistic to aim for some kind of Victorian grand tour. Poor people are entitled to food, motor vehicles and the internet too. Poverty tourism is my bete noir.

re nam anyway

I havent been since USSR breakup days and can imagine things have changed a great deal - you could still buy French Dien Bein era Rolexes and omegas in the junk shops in Hanoi for a few USD. I may be going back fairly soon as it happens. I would urge anyone looking to travel in Nam to read Tim pages " derailed in uncle Ho's victory garden" as an interesting backgound to the Nam/CAm region - an ex Viet war photographer travels back - rather interesting insights to modern vietman vs memories of his experiences. Its out of print now, but worth tracking down.

I cannot recommed Cambodia enough though - its stunning and you get a real feel for a society rebuilding itself as you watch, its almost an experiment - the good and the bad are evident everywhere, but truly fascinating.

    • Before going to Social Media it is always worth checking out the details: Southwark's spending for this year: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/council-tax/how-we-manage-council-tax/our-budget-and-how-we-spend-council-tax/our-income-and As you will see, as with most if not all London Boroughs, shed loads goes on social care and children's services.  The cost of paying for residential care, and for 'specialist schools is massive.  As with other boroughs they have been hit hard by austerity under the coalition government.  And the failure by successive governments to sort out social care.  That is a thread all in its own rights. Local authorities of all political persuasions across England are facing tough times, several have gone into administration: Birmingham, Woking, Thurrock, Croydon, Slough, Northamptonshire, and Nottingham and 11 are on bailouts.   Covid will not have helped.  Some will have made some poor investment decisions in the past eg Thurrock and Woking;  Some total mismanagement and one has been hit by historical debt through not paying their workers fairly (Brum).   Reform promise simple solutions to cutting spending.  Not that easy is it Nige?
