Until it closed, the Blue Brick Cafe in East Dulwich offered the most wonderful home-cooked chips to accompany a spot of the old egg & b. But now, sadly, it has gone.

I have searched far and wide - at enormous physical expense - for a cafe that offers non-frozen, hand-cut chips in the area but have sadly drawn a blank.

Does anyone know of anywhere that offers this simple delight? (Will travel)

Pat

Dear Pat

It has been gone for ages the Blue BC

Where have you been all this time ?

Mind you, when you find a nice fat hand cut chip, do let me know

Meanwhile, I make a very nice chip here at Curtain Towers

And next time i'm (double) frying, i'll think of you

I'm with you there

They're strangely cardboardy, but the mushy peas & fish are good

The one near the Herne are quite nice too

Hi all,

Yes, the chippy-with-seating is often the last refuge for the chip-lover searching for a breakfast.

I have tried the Sea Cow and agree the chips are not up to scratch - very disappointing for an otherwise fine establishment.

I have not tried the one on Northcross Rd and will try it out.

The problem I find though is that while chippy chips are often good, the kitchen does not offer egg and bacon to accompany them.

I'd be interested in hearing of any cafe in London that offers this simple delight!

Pat

You could always hot foot it to the chippy of your choice, then carefully protecting your cherished portion of chips run as fast as you can back to yours, put the chips in a pre-heated oven to keep warm, sling some bacon under the grill, fry an egg or two, serve it all on a warm plate and tuck in! Mmmmmmmm!

I went out with a girl who gutted chickens in a Littlehampton factory

She worked in a freezer room essentially

Ooooooh her hands were always cold & she had that fleshy meaty smell about her

Needless to say it didn't last & I moved on to the girl from the crispa-cress packers. Her odour was just fine btw

(they were lean days down there)

The seacow chips are fried in corn oil, quite horrible and the chips in underhill road are still vile half green warm

insulting exscuse for a fish and chip shop and a waste of money.

The best chip shop closed down years back by the police station run by the chinese family, dont know where they went

wish they,d come back,

The chip shop in North cross road cook theirs in nut oil, horrible

WANTED IN EAST DULWICH> A new fish and chip shop, that can cook traditional fish and chips, like you get down the seaside, Any new arrivals will be recieved.

The Chinese did not move away, still there.

The guy I think suffers a degenerative ailment and walks now with a stick, I see him regularly getting the bus. I think he does some kind of teaching/support for kids in Chinatown which, considering his condition, is quite a feat.

Nice guy. I generally found his chips to be soggy, but I was always a 10.30pm customer.

Some replies...

Yes! The Regency, off Horseferry Road, is exactly the type of establishment I mean. A classic British cafe that offers fresh, chip-shop chips. It's exactly one hour's walk from where I live, enough time to build up a hunger.

I would, as some have suggested, do my own home-chip-frying, but sometimes you just want someone to do it for you, while you have a good sit down and check the weather on your phone.

I have also, as suggested, dashed back from the chippy and hastily prepared the egg and b. at home. Can certainly do the trick, but you still have to do the washing up. My favourite chippy, FWIW, is the Herne Hill Fish Bar - http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/52/1588610/restaurant/Dulwich/Herne-Hill-Fish-Bar-London

    • Don't see an issue at all. Siunds like the protest is being made by friends and families of the two off licences, Morleys, pret and maxim chicken who are within 100 m of the school. Much ado about nothing. Besides if it doesn't proceed, the kids will walk a but further!!
    • Whilst I agree to some extent,  are they going to have some kind of checkpoint?  I can't see how this could work in practice. Surely Southwark residents go to these places quite frequently as well, particularly Tate Modern?  Will we have to take proof of residency every time we go out? What happens when family are with us who don't live in Southwark? Will other London boroughs start doing the same thing? Will Southwark residents be charged a tourist tax to visit "tourist attractions" in other areas, eg the V&A and the British Museum?
    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
