Dear resident,

Southwark, like the rest of the country, is still in lockdown, despite some changes to government guidance. We must all stay at home as much as possible and keep our distance from others if we need to go out.

Therefore, if you go outside this weekend, please keep 2m away from others. You should only go out with members of your household or meet one person ? outside and at a 2m distance ? who?s not from your household. We are working on a plan to open more areas for sports (more details below) but will only do this where and when we can do it safely.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, so much important work continues in Southwark. And today, as part of Foster Care Fortnight, I?d like to thank all of our extraordinary foster carers who continue to play such a vital role supporting children and young people in Southwark. If you think you could make a difference and have a spare room we?d love to talk to you about fostering.

Thank you for helping to keep Southwark safe.

Cllr Peter John

Dear all,

I hope you are all well,

Policing approach this weekend

?

Throughout the weekend, officers will continue to be on their usual patrols. You will see our officers on mobile and foot patrol, on bikes as well across Lambeth and Southwark, in our hotspot locations for violent crime, as well as our parks and open spaces engaging with people and explaining the regulations. We are grateful to our communities who are following the regulations.

?

We have seen some instances of large groups gathering, including for example around amplified music or BBQs in public in circumstances in breach of the COVID regulations and causing Anti-Social Behaviour to local residents and businesses. We have a graduated and proportionate response to these groups and gatherings, using our approach to engage, explain, and encourage compliance. Where it has been proportionate and necessary to do so we have also implemented dispersal powers. We will endeavour to keep you updated when this happens, as well as publish details on social media via @LambethMPS and @MPSSouthwark. Our aim is to keep people safe and protect the NHS, as well as reduce crime and anti-social behaviour for all our communities in Southwark and Lambeth. ?

We would also like to send our very best wishes to you all this Bank Holiday weekend and to those in our community who will be looking forward to celebrating Eid al-Fitr this weekend.?

Hidden harms ? Domestic Abuse

?

Yesterday the Government held a virtual hidden harms summit to discuss how to support victims of crimes such as domestic abuse, sexual violence and modern slavery. One of the things discussed was the potential implementation of a codeword scheme, championed by the Victims Commissioner, to support victims of domestic abuse which could be used, for example to alert shop workers that someone needed help.?

?

As you know, the Met prioritises keeping people safe and takes a zero-tolerance approach to domestic abuse. With people socially distancing and self-isolating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that this puts potential victims at greater risk.

?

Domestic abuse is historically an under-reported crime and victims may feel more isolated, and like they have less opportunity to access help and support.

?

Officers are continuing to prioritise and respond to domestic abuse calls, and we continue to work closely with a range of partners to ensure victims receive the support and service they need.

?

If you are experiencing domestic abuse or you know a friend, relative or neighbour who you think is at risk, call police right away. In an emergency, always call 999 ? high harm domestic abuse calls will continue to be prioritised.

?

The 24/7 National Domestic Abuse helpline, which offers support to victims and people affected by domestic abuse, is free to call on 0808 2000 247.

Violence Suppression Units

?

Last week, Commissioner Cressida Dick announced the launch of our new Violence Suppression Units (VSU) ? a new team of more than 620 officers who will spearhead suppression activity at a local and neighbourhood level.

?

Commander Alex Murray, from our Specialist Crime Command was interviewed on LBC this morning (09:20hrs) about the role of VSU officers and how they will help us to focus on the Met priority ? reducing violent crime.

?

You can also read about the VSU here: http://news.met.police.uk/news/commissioner-sets-out-plans-to-continue-to-tackle-violent-crime-402325

We are delighted to invite you to join us for Neighbourhood Watch Week, 7th ? 13th June 2020

?

This year we are encouraging neighbours to say thank you and celebrate what it means to be a neighbour, the connections we have made, and the importance of staying connected through good and bad times.?

?

Over the past few months, as our lives have all been turned upside down, the word ?neighbourliness? has never meant so much to so many.?Communities have pulled together to provide vital support and resources, an army of volunteers has emerged, people are learning new skills, and as a result have become more resilient.?

?

Since early March, we have been encouraging people to ?Be Kind, Connect, Support and Share? during these challenging times as part of the?Community Action Response.?As part of the campaign, award winning cartoonist?Tony Husband?has created bespoke cartoons for the four community actions to show just how important our neighbours are at this time. Tony?s cartoons can be downloaded as posters to display in your window, or postcards to pop through a neighbour?s door, and if you are feeling creative you can draw your very own cartoon and enter it in a competition to be launched on the 7th June and judged by Tony himself.

?

You can download the posters and postcards from our website as well as Neighbourhood Watch Week bunting to make at home. To kickstart the week, we are inviting you to take part in the?Big Virtual Lunch?activities, organised by Eden Project, on the 6th and 7th June. The Big Lunch have put together ideas of?small things you can do?to celebrate community connections with your neighbours such as making your own bunting and spread some neighbourly joy by hanging it out for all to see, put together a lunch for someone or a small food parcel and leave it on a doorstep, join in with The Big Lunch from your doorstep, raise a cuppa, wave a sausage roll or have a picnic in your own gardens at the same time,?host a Big Virtual Lunch online?from the comfort of your own home, and ideas to host a?Big Virtual Lunch over the phone.

?

Each day between the 7th ? 13th June we will be sharing stories on our social media channels and website highlighting the big and small ways in which neighbours have been connecting, sharing, supporting and spreading kindness.

?

We?ve put together the attached social media pack with posts you can share to support the week both in the countdown and in the week itself. We?ve also attached a press release as it would be great if you could share with your media contacts.

?

We would love you to help us reach as many people as possible by inviting your staff, partners, and communities to take part in celebrating their neighbours.

?

If you have any questions please get in touch.

?

Many thanks

?

#LetsStayConnected.

Briefing note

COVID19 ? 33 ? 01/06/2020

?

Dear all,

?

I hope you are well.

?

Weekend protest activity

?

You are likely to have seen or read about a number of protests that have taken place across London, including in Peckham, this weekend.? A number of these are in response to the tragic death of George Floyd in the US.? We are aware of the views of many members of our community and the tension and upset this incident has caused.?

?

Our wish remains to keep London safe and you will have seen a police presence at the protests in order to achieve this.? We understand that the intention of protest organisers is that the protests are peaceful and it is our hope that this continues.?

?

We police London by consent and our good relationship with our communities is very important to us. We therefore continue to liaise with local community groups and forums in Lambeth and Southwark to discuss any concerns that they might have regarding the current situation, and any other incident that may cause local concern. Our local neighbourhood officers are also conducting patrols on their wards, engaging with local communities and providing reassurance.

?

Covid restrictions

?

As you know further changes to the Covid restrictions are in place from today. This includes allowing up to six people to meet outside - provided those from different households continue to strictly observe social distancing.? Also, a number of schools in our local areas are now welcoming some pupils back to school.?

?

Visible policing patrols

?

We will continue to patrol local ?micro-beats? in Southwark and Lambeth with high visibility patrols to prevent crime as the streets, parks, and open spaces become busier as the lockdown eases further. Through data and intelligence these ?micro-beats? are known for violent crime in particular. We also continue to work closely with Lambeth and Southwark Councils and endeavour to keep crime down, keep you safe, and provide reassurance.

?

You can follow updates in Southwark via @MPSSouthwark or Lambeth via @LambethMPS on Twitter

I would like to thank you for your continued support.

  • Latest Discussions

    • Okay Earl, of those 'consulted' how many voices were in favour of the junction and how many against? Were there more responses in favour or more against? This local junction change is being driven by Southwark Labour Councillors- not as you assert by Central Govt. Also, if consultations are so irrelevant as indicators of meaningful local support in the way you seem to imply, why do organisations like Southwark Cyclists constantly ask their members to respond to all and any consultation on LTN's and CPZ's?
    • You could apply the same argument to any kind of penalty as an effective deterrent.  Better than doing nothing.
    • Check the link I provided above. It’s gives a very full account of where the push for LTNs came from, (in brief, central government). The consultation did not show that the majority of local residents were against the LTN. Not for the first time, you’ve confused a ‘consultation’ with a ‘referendum’. The outcome of local elections (which many opposed to LTNs excitedly promoted as a referendum on the scheme), suggested they are actually quite popular. All the polling on LTNs generally, also shows majority support across London.
    • Rockets said: "Perhaps you should be asking who is lobbying the council to close the junction or parts of it or why the council is happy to waste so much of our money on it - who are they representing as even their own consultation demonstrated they did not have support from the local community for the measures? The results showed the majority of local residents were against the measure...but they are going ahead with them anyway" This.
