loft conversion - how to proceed?

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of converting my totally unused loft into an ensuite bedroom or even a studio. How shall I proceed now? I guess the first step would be to have someone to come and have a look and come up with some proposals, right? Whom would I have to contact for this, architects or loft conversion agencies? Is this something I should pay for, or like other tradesmen who simply come to give you a quote,is it a free service?
