Hi there all,

Juut wanted to remind everyone to be safe and secure. Whilst I was at work yesterday our ground floor flat on Barry Road was burgled.

They came in through the ground floor kitchen window. We have new double glazed windows which were locked - but they still crowbarred their way in. They took two laptops and some irreplaceable jewellery that was not even worth that much money but holds a lot of sentimental value...

The police advised us to make sure it was harder to get around the back of the house, and to hide laptops and valuables, so just passing this on.

They also said that whilst there are not too many burglaries in ED, there have been a couple recently on Barry Road.

Take care all.

Sophie.

How awful. You poor things.

Maybe for peace of mind you should get a monitored alarm fitted. Direct Security are a good company based in Sydenham. I've used them for over 10 years and would highly recommend them and their rates are reasonable. I hope I'm allowed to put this link here but here are their contact details. http://www.directsecurity.net/Contactus.html

Terrible news. Any prints? With all these incidents gong on, you'd think the police would be more on point, but seems they've got better things to do. Last year our own house was completely ransacked on Underhill Road, no one saw a thing. No prints, nothing. Happened very similar to yours, through the ground floor kitchen window. They actually dragged the brown garden bin to the window and used it as a thing to climb on. They then knocked down the back fence and made their escape via lordship lane (again no cctv, despite searching though hours worth). This seems to a a prevalent tactic these days, the back garden kitchen thing.
I don't think it's nuts at all. Barry Road is clearly a regular target. With ED Police Station closing down and the police being too busy with other things to actually come over for a burglary incident when you need them (as in my case), I think cameras are a marvellous idea.

Hi there

Thanks all for your good wishes.. They may break my window but not my spirit!!

Sorry to say that there were no prints.. I have to commend the police who were round really quickly and were really supportive, as were the safer neighbourhood team who visited us the next day to advise as too how we could step up the security.

WhoopDeDoop - your experience sounds terrible. Hope you are ok and back to normal at home..

Take care,

Sophie.

I'd go for cameras! Though I suppose you might hear the nuts crunching as they walk into your garden and they are cheaper!

Burglarized, what a horrible americanism

We live near the top of Barry Road and my neighbour got burgled at night about 2 weeks ago when he was sleeping. He had his expensive car stolen too.

They came through the front door which should have been double locked, but wasn't. The next door neighbour has a dog too, but no-one heard anything.

I've got the same type of door, so you can bet I'm double locking mine after what happened to my neighbour, even during the day.

The police have said there is a rise in burglaries in the area recently.

    • Hello East Dulwich families 👋 I wanted to introduce myself to the community. I’m a professional family & wedding photographer with 14+ years of experience, and I split my time between the US and London throughout the year. I’ll be based in London for the coming weeks and would love to photograph more local families here in East Dulwich. My approach is very relaxed and natural — no stiff posing, no pressure — just real connection, movement, and the beautiful everyday moments that tell your family’s story. I work especially well with kids and parents who feel “awkward” in front of the camera (which honestly is most of us!). Sessions can take place at home, in the park, on your favourite street, or anywhere that feels meaningful to you. The goal is to create images that feel like your life — not a photoshoot. If anyone has been thinking about documenting this season with their children, I’d love to connect, answer questions, or simply share examples of my work. No pressure at all — just happy to be here and meet some neighbours. You can see my work here: https://bluesparkphotography.com/family/ (use the contact page on the site to send me a message if you're interested!).
    • I don't! But I've also taken to calling myself David, as it seems to shorten the odds of achieving something in life. It's not King Dave, Dave Lloyd George, Dave Hockney, Dave Bowie or Dave Hasselhoff is it? And I'm not sure Michelangelo would have had such success if he'd called his sculpture 'Dave'.
    • I think there is still a shoes/clothes recycling bank outside of North Dulwich station.
