You can usually look up its licensing conditions on the Southwark website. Some times they say something about indoor and outdoor spaces. Sometimes conditions will refer to the plans but IIRC those aren't always downloadable. When I've emailed the council licensing team in the past, they have been very responsive.

I think they would need planning permission - contact the planning enforcement office and ask them to investigate.

Why don?t you go down and talk to them instead of involving the authorities from the off? Local businesses need all the help they can get right now, not grief from the council.

But why send an email when you could just go down and talk it through face to face? If you felt that bad you wouldn?t be running straight to the authorities. Give it a week or so and it?s going to be too cold for it to be a problem

I'm with you fries. I think if you sent an email and they didn't respond to you reaching out that doesn't feel right. You're so right to try to contact them first but if they don't respond, what can you do?

The wider concern is if they're not licensed and trying to 'get away with this' then that is a bit off.

I think premises are licensed so they probably have every right, and in the current health crisis need, to use their outdoor space

I?m sure it is extremely annoying but I wouldn?t have thought you have a leg to stand on, I?m sure they have the standard be courteous to neighbours signage up

Jesus, I?d imagine all they?re trying to get away with is keeping their business alive at the hardest time in a generation. Firstly you have no idea if they?re licensed for the outdoor area or not, secondly, you have no idea if they?ve even seen the email or not. Would take 5 seconds to put your head in the door and have a conversation about it instead of causing trouble for them with the council.

Some people would rather the high street (that they CHOSE to live on) was all boarded up rather than them have 5 minutes of inconvenience

What high street are you on about?

If they're allowed to use the back garden, there's not going to be any trouble from the council because it's going to be a very short conversation.

I'd say normal for the UK is to say nothing and quietly complain. We British don't do much "face to face" stuff as it's seen to be not the thing we do.

If they're allowed they're allowed if they aren't they aren't. No problem in checking and looking after your own interests.
