Old Kent Road Recycling centre is now accepting cardboard!

I was so pleased to go to the Old Kent Road Recycling centre and find that they now have a big section for cardboard. Thank you to the clever person/people who made this happen!

The recycling truck has always taken our oversize cardboard waste, if left next to the blue bin

We have had them take large cardboard that was placed next to the blue bin in the past. This week I had placed some cardboard (folded and flat) against the blue bin and it was just left so it may depend upon the mood of the bin men.

my bin men collect nothing not inside the bin. They will discard anything stacked against/on top of the bin, however neatly and obvious for collection, into my front garden. Not a given !

It does seem to depend on the individual collector.

I have seen waste collectors put separate large cardboard pieces in the truck with no problem

That would make sense, though surely they have to handle the bins which will have been touched by others?

I've been going to the OKR Recycling centre for 10 years and there's always been a cardboard section there. In fact it's the first one you come to!

I think the cardboard section at the OKR site had been removed during Covid to allow for social distancing between the bays. The first time I went there during Covid (incidentally because the council stopped collecting recycling that was not in the blue bin - they had done previously) I was surprised there was no longer a cardboard section but glad to read it is back.

Or the mood of the bin women! A few weeks ago we had a new bin woman collecting on the street.

For the first time in ages I left out a small cardboard box against my recycling bin and watched as she just looked at it and left it.

We?ve had cardboard by the side of the bin collected during COVID. It?s not 100% though. They also never seem to take it if it is/has been damp.

Does anyone know where we can recycle plastic carrier bags now? We had to use them for our online supermarket deliveries during lockdown, so accumulated quite a backlog :-(

The supermarket delivery drivers will often take them back. I don't know if there are still in-store bins...

Thanks DKHB - The problem is that we've got a huge backlog now, and I think it would overwhelm the driver!

Yes, I'll have a look in the store - maybe they have got them again now...

We gave hundreds to the Ocado driver when they started accepting them again. He didn?t seem surprised or mind at all.

If you're stuck, I can use them.

I use them for bin bags and also for my kitchen compost bin.

I wash and re-use them till they fall to bits 🙂
