just replying to the "Enfield is also pretty horrid" although it's more Barnet. One of my friends lives in Whetstone so I used to be up there a bit.

So I say the Mitre in Barnet and the Griffen in Whetsotone always seemed OK to me and I didn't see racism when I was up there.

Earlier in the year, hubby went several times to the Plough and in talking with staff, was informed that they kept a close eye on numbers, people were refused entry if more than an certain number were drinking on the premises.

If government allowed pubs and restaurant with good SD and covid precautions to operate a system where pre booking is essential and a maximum stay of 2 hours is allowed, this would bring in some form of income. I remember having to book at a popular restaurant some years ago and they were only offering 2 hour slots,i.e. 6,8,10 pm. A manager would appear and remind you that you only had 20 minutes left to finish your meal.A bit of a rush but if the menus were slightly reduced to allow a 3 course meal to be prepared and eaten in the 2 hour slot, this would help out a bit. Obviously reduced number on the premises with each slot.

It's about policing/enforcement which didn't happen I expect due to resources. Official surveys showed that most people behaved themselves in lockdown one because they believed in the measures rather than fear of prosecution. Not so as time continued for a variety of reasons.

Apols of laying into Enfield, it shouldn't be characterised by one scummy pub. I expect you would get similar views as you come to some of the outer boroughs on this side of the Thames - white working class in multicultural areas who consider that the country has changed for the worst. Like my late Auntie in Cricklewood - although she would just say inappropriate comments rather than out and out hatred which shocked me.

jimlad - With hospitals in danger of filling-up and people potentially being turned-away to die somewhere else, do you still hold the same view as you posted previously ?

I am not looking for an argument and I consider you to be a solid poster with considered views, but do you think people should be going out and about (if confident enough to), socialising in pubs, rather than hiding from the virus and ruining the economy?

Isn't the "life goes on" attitude the reason we're so screwed now? The countries that made hard decisions and tough measures in the short term are the ones that have now returned to some form of normality.

Regarding Enfield... I am familiar with the area. Enfield is reasonable diverse and voted Labour/Remain so I feel the picture you are painting is somewhat inaccurate. However, most of the immediately surrounding areas (on the Herts/Essex border) are hardcore Boris/Brexit territory.

In deed, I did apologise. It was a point about pubs that didn't follow the rules, not all are used by old school racists, although I expect there is a belief by some in this demographic that Covid-19 is a conspiracy theory. Happnes on the left too.
Virtual chinking of glasses Sparticus. And a virtual fight outside after closing time. Younger posters will not remember brawls inside and outside pubs. It always seemed to occur on a Friday night, for example when we had seen a film in Streatham. Not sure if I miss that though.

    • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Support from No-Files – A Truly Exceptional Experience I want to extend a huge thank you to Tony at No-Files Estate Agents for his incredible help and unwavering support over the past 10 months. My flat sale was far from straightforward, and I truly don’t think I’d be in my new home today without him. The process was made extremely difficult by solicitors who were unprofessional, unresponsive, and at times, outright rude. They refused to communicate with each other, which caused significant delays and confusion throughout the chain. Tony became the key point of contact between four people in the chain and the other estate agent, constantly stepping in to manage communication and keep things moving. The situation became so complex that all parties were forced to exchange and complete on the same day. Despite all three buyers and sellers having removal vans booked and packed, one solicitor refused to answer calls and only sent a single email at 3:55pm making it impossible for anyone to move that day. This caused unnecessary stress and cost for everyone involved and we all live for weeks with a flat with all my items packed away. To make matters worse, my mortgage offer—along with the offers for others in the chain—was expiring. Solicitors offered no guidance and simply suggested reapplying, with no clear timeline or confidence in the process. Throughout it all, Tony remained calm, communicative, and supportive. He was the only person I could rely on to explain what was happening, keep everyone in the loop, and offer reassurance during moments when I felt completely overwhelmed. His professionalism, dedication, and genuine care made all the difference. I am so grateful I chose No-Files. Although I’m sad to have moved out of the area and may not be able to use them again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend them. If you're looking for an estate agent who is professional, honest, transparent, and truly goes above and beyond—No-Files and Tony are exactly who you need. Thank you again, Tony — I truly couldn’t have done this without you! May 2025  Andrea
