Hi,

I lost the sound on my HP Pavilion DV7 after it rained on it. There is no sound through the speakers, no sound through headphones BUT there is sound transmitted to my TV when I plug it through HDMI. I hope this is a sign that it's not completely lost. What do you think ?

Is there an IT wiz who can give me some tips ?

many thanks

Katy

Leave it for a few days ahah ?? I am working with my computer all day, I can't have it off a few days lol. It's been a week now since that happened, and I am using it over 10 hours a day, I would think it had time to dry by now.

Firstly check what happens if you change the settings sound output to various other devices. It sounds like you use HDMI sometimes, but not all the time.

Some applications on my own laptop (principally browsers) have always been a pain in the arse when changing outputs. I sometimes need to restart applications after changing output devices to swap between HDMI and headphones for example.

In the worst scenario, I'm afraid your HDMI card and your normal sound card for speakers/headphones are very likely to be different hardware. This means it is indeed possible to fry your normal sound card with HDMI sound still working.

    • I don't know how it works now but my late parents had little money when they were retired (just state pension and they rented their flat) and they used to take their cat to the Blue Cross (In Victoria if I remember correctly) where treatment was free for those who could'nt afford a private vet. I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
    • Like I thought… prob like that for most of the day.. especially after people had walked their dogs, with friends, relatives  kids…
