In January I will be going to my first ever baby shower and I have no idea what to take as a gift. The baby will be my niece/nephew, so I'm going to be quite involved in its life. This won't be the only gift I ever buy it, but I know the first present needs to be a special one.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

Lamaze soft toys are beautifully made - lots of different textures and subtle multi-sensory elements which mean babies return to them time and time again.

We also received a set of gorgeous books - all very baby friendly as they were small board books which again, almost a year on, we are still using. We received Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, and Peepo.

Some beautiful booties also went down a treat. Have a look at padraig slippers which you can buy on the Born website (gorgeous shop in stoke newington but also online).

Well as it needs to be a special gift, how about something that will last a little longer than the first 6-12 months - a box set of children's classics? or maybe a more personal gift - a children's book that was special to you and is yours? The box set of board books is a lovely idea and you'll get so much use out of them. Though you might want to save the classics or personal stuff for the christening? I do seem to recall that baby-showers are lighthearted events and that the gifts tend to reflect that. How about an expensive bit of designer frippery that the Mum might usually admire from afar but would never usually indulge in?
I'd go for something nice for mum- you'll buy loads for baby once its born, so its sometimes nice to get a bit of a treat for mum whilst she is preganent (depending on budget, a pregnancy massage- Cowshed do lovely ones, nice smellies, a pedicure-great when you can't see your feet)....

    • Real shame they went under. We have a rectangular table (that we are keeping) which is great. I would set some ebay search alerts if you haven't done so already.
    • Hello my name is Kat and I’m currently studying Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy with CPHT London, and I’m offering free online hypnotherapy sessions as part of my professional training.  This is a safe, modern, and well-researched approach that helps people break free from the negative cycles of anxiety, low mood, and stress, and move toward calm, confidence, and lasting positive change. I’m studying CPHT’s accredited training, led by experienced, practising hypnotherapists, which is widely recognised as the UK's gold standard in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Over my training, I’ve already seen great results, and I’m now looking for volunteers who may benefit from support with 🌿 Anxiety and low mood (including stress, sleep issues, or IBS) What’s included: 💫 A full course of free weekly sessions (typically 8–12 weeks) 💫 Insight into how your brain works, and how to work with it 💫 Practical tools to feel calmer, more confident, and in control What’s required: ✔️ Commitment to weekly sessions ✔️ A stable internet connection for online sessions I have an enhanced DBS check and am a student member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy and the Association for Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy. If you’d like to take part or have any questions, please send me a direct message to book an initial consultation. I’d love to hear from you Warmest Kat
    • If this is approved BT will probably apply to remove the phone box. These cost far more than they earn and are very vulnerable to vandelism. The old phone boxes are not ideal to become WiFi hubs, and will need the same level of engineering work to convert (they will be connected over copper). And they don't offer the advertising opportunity which pays for the free WiFi.
    • They're big and ugly electronic advertising boards. There's a shagged out phone box across the road that could do the same thing!
