Did you post the concern here on the EDF before contacting the local authority, Drxyster? Either way I hope the green bins in question have been dealt with!

This is the first disruption to collections (for me at least) since the start of the first lockdown - I know that numbers of Veolia staff have been ill or have had to self-isolate because of vulnerable people they live with - current reports suggest 30% of staff are ill or isolating. Most crews are substantially changed since the start of this emergency, but they continue to do a not very nice but exceedingly necessary job. And do it, from my experience at least, with good grace.

With iced roads and slippery conditions Tuesday was treacherous, I'm not surprised they stopped working. Once a bin lorry starts to slide on our hills they can become exceedingly dangerous. And the pavements were like skating rinks in some parts, where they weren't treated.

I agree that the guys doing this job have always worked very hard (especially so, but not just in the last twelve months).

It's a shame though they that they have to catch up at the weekend and will no doubt be dealing with more waste than usual with a delayed collection, particularly if this is just because the roads weren't gritted.

I would welcome advice, in this road we have had no collections at all, our collection day is Monday, obviously they could not come. The Southwark site claims that this was remedied on 11th and 12th, our blue bin, now overflowing, has been scheduled on to 22nd!

I have filled in the site forms, which apparently has to be done a bin at a time, reporting this but would welcome a customer service email or similar, is there anyone I can speak to? our road is becoming very disordered!

Now today they haven?t emptied our small brown food waste bin. The top was not completely closed. If this is the reason it is getting ridiculous. Obviously while at home we are all consuming more. We don?t even have any public bins anymore like we had in peckham rye car park to deal with extras.

My food waste bin has not been emptied for three weeks, however as noted above, it says on the website that they are running behind and please not to report the non collection on the website.

I think we should cut them some slack, what with absences due to Covid and the awful weather last week.

Awful weather? I think that's a bit of an exaggeration and to keep using the excuse of covid is just being silly now. Other services and business have had to adapt to all sorts of ever changing circumstances over this past year (I stress past year). This is not something new that's popped up.

If a service is not going to be provided or changed considerably, the council should just tell us instead of making excuses or even claiming (they are saying some collections have been made when they haven't) its sorted.

The weather was very bad last week and it was slippery underfoot, even with the (patchy, it has to be said) gritting by the council. I agree that it is preferable to have bins, especially ones with food wasted, emptied as scheduled but also get that the council could have caused injury to its employees and damage to property had it gone out in the bad weather.

It is a great opportunity to realise how much stuff we throw away, even the "nice" rubbish, like old cabbage and plastic packaging....

I wonder if Southwark has ever considered implementing the Edinburgh system of bins. They have no bins allocated to individual homes but instead several very large communal ones dispersed intermittently in the street, or at the end of streets. this frees up people?s front gardens/spaces so they don?t have the hideous collection of blue, brown and green plastic crowding the front of homes and spilling onto pavements.. Easier for bin men to access. One for recycle, one for household. Positioned in non parking spaces so no more pressure on parking spaces,

Huggers

I bet that looks awful especially as most communal bins (in tower blocks for example) are not maintained by the residents, tend to overflow between collections or be abused by non residents using them to dump all sorts of stuff, plus during a pandemic sharing bin space isn't a great idea.

Just my observation

    • I wanted to just add that my experience has shown me that fitness classes aimed at an older demographic are often nowhere near as good or as much fun as those aiming at all and sundry.. most classes I've been to NOT aiming at 'Middle aged' people have had such a mixed bag and everyone does what they can at their own pace and this is encouraged. Do give it a go.
    • Greens have some mad polices and I am still trying to work out if it is true that the leader of the party thought he could hypnotize women to have larger breasts 🤷‍♂️ country is in a real state at the min and all party’s have a part to play in that. what the future holds who knows but it is worrying.
    • A stellar win for the Greens in Gorton and Denton, no doubt. But by-elections are funny beasts. Labour's strength traditionally has been in its ground game. Legions of canvassers over many years in many seats usually means that they are best placed to 'get out the vote' on election day. I can't quite believe that the Greens have enough data, or people, to wrest control of the council from Labour.
    • Was a regular haunt of mine for many years and had a lot of fun times in there and some marvellous food down the years. Though, admittedly I spent most of my time in there doing some serious boozing. In recent times I've been a less frequent visitor to this fine establishment. I seriously hope it doesn't change too much. It's always had a good vibe in there and that's down to Tim and Rod and all of the staff who have worked there over the past 26 years.
