There was a very helpful thread recently on getting your child to get dressed. I took up the very excellent suggestion of having a race to get dressed in the morning, - we've done it now for 10 days - and it is working a treat. not only does my daughter dress herself, it also means that I am dressed in plenty of time in the morning - so everything is going a lot more smoothly on school days! i thought she would see straight through me - but no!

tips now on badly needed on getting them to wipe their bottoms after a no 2 please? I had to take my daughter home from school yesterday with a really bad tummy ache - she did a big poo when she got home and then was fine - had been holding it since morning break as was worried about wiping - she won't wipe herself as is worried about getting mucky hands. I have demonstrated til kingdom come and will she do it - no! She is now however receptive as she appreciates that she needs to do herself as was in so much pain from holding it - I have a feeling she will come in today desperate as is due for one -- what do I do to get her to do it herself. Is it just a case of trial and error and getting on with it? I have told her that I will never tell her off for coming home with mucky pants from school if she can't get it right.

I started off by agreeing that they would wipe first then I would finish the job. Then one day I would walk away and leave them and pretend to be busy doing something. If they called me I would say I was coming. In the end they got fed up waiting and did it themselves. Having an attractive wipe box also helped.

Kandoo wipes or similar are good. And showing them by actually guiding their hands through taking enough paper, holding it, leaning their arm round

Also thorough hand washing practice and reassuring them that germs wash off. Reminding them that parents have changed 1000s if nappies and wiped lots of bottoms and still have clean hands

Even if they don't like doing it and aren't very good at it, they will try it when they have no choice ...

Making time after breakfast for a poo at home is worthwhile though

Plus there is no need for the bum presentation that seems so prevalent, tell them to wiggle and see if it feels clean

Bum wiping should be part of potty training really, once using the toilet is established and within a week or so they can start wiping for themselves so it never becomes such an issue.

My favourite ever comment was a friends child who reliably informed me he couldn't wipe his own bum, because his arms were too short :D

    • You'd need to get a proper quote (or three) for instance removing a cast iron bath is a very different job from removing an acrylic one. Again what pipe work will be being joined into - matching old imperial pipes with modern metric ones is different from like to like, as is dealing with a copper or an iron distribution system. The amount (area) of retiling required is an issue, as will be the state of the wall behind the tiles. It may of course all be very plain sailing, or not. Have a first look at plumber recommendations on the relevant pages on this site. If it's all easy then 3 days work may be sufficient. But it could be a week if there are snags.
    • Hi. Can anyone suggest a plumber for the job below? Replace bath tub with a shower enclosure, putting pipes to showerhead behind wall, re-titling damaged/removed tiles Also any idea of the costs involved for the labour as we will buy the items required?
    • Aria came round to fix my tub drain when I'd messed up the seal. Came within hours, fixed the tub, and ran a bath to make sure it was okay. Here's where the fun starts. While he was over, I asked him questions about the rest of the plumbing round the house. I had just moved into a Victorian home that was previously being rented. Unsurprisingly, we found another leak in the tub and a drip in the kitchen tap.  He came back the next day to put a better pipe in my bathtub and replace the kitchen sink. Painstakingly figured out how to replace the hard-to-access kitchen sink without cutting through the wood panel with the help of his builder friend, Mark. Answered all my questions and clearly knew his stuff. All this right before Christmas holidays!
