Hi there

I am getting my loft converted hopefully this year. I met the guys from Absolute Lofts(www.absolutelofts.com) who seem decent. Does anyone have any experience of Absolute they would care to share. Or any recommendations for other firms.

Any feedback much appreciated

many thanks

Jay

Hi jay I would recommend Hamilton Walker Building Contractors they have just done my loft and I am very pleased with the work they have done. I had loads of companies come round to quote and all giving me the sales speech. This company actually took the time to sit with me and explain how it all works and go through some figures as well.

Classic Lofts built my loft conversion at the end of last year. They are good at getting the best space out of a small loft and good at explaining how the the process works.I've had lots of compliments from friends and visitors, you can come and have a look if you like.

Please please try Pat @ dulwich lofts. We had all the usual's round & they were the only firm who actually take time to look at your property, rather than just bang one up. Great example, we've got a bathroom in the loft & they managed to plumb it in without using a saniflow..the others couldn't offer that. He's on 07711897354 or they have a website. The finish is fantastic & they work extremely hard.

re Classic Lofts - beg to differ.... ours was a nightmare with them. They wouldn't liaise with the council over inspections, the steelwork they designed wasn't up to the job and had to be doubled in size before it was approved, the plumbing was shoddy and the design beggars belief. Main fusebox was left held together with insulation tape, and we spent the next 18 months after hiring other tradesmen to make good on their corner-cutting. The whole experience still makes me shudder. But hey, ymmv....!

Classics have just finished our loft (bedroom with ensuite) and we couldn't be happier. The whole team were courteous and professional throughout the 10 week build. Any issues were sorted immediately (including with the Council who they liaised with directly), the quality of the work is second to none (certainly no corner cutting in our experience) and they did an amazing job of getting the most out of the space. We are absolutley delighted with the result. The people opposite us used Classic and our next door neighbours have just signed them up based on the experience and outcome we've both had.

Re Classic Lofts.....totally unbelievable. Phoned and asked for a quote on Loft Conversion and extension. Came round, didn't even measure or look in the loft then told me they didn't do extensions. Phoned their office and asked if they did extensions as well as attic conversions (clearly etched on their shop front)and was informed "of course we do Madam". When I explained what I had been told he assured me that they do and would get back to me straight away................................still waiting for that phone call. Got the quote two and a half weeks later for just the attic conversion.............much more expensive than four other quotes.

I have to say I wasn't impressed with one of the loft companies mentioned above either. Expensive and very hard sales orientated.

In the end (we looked at 5 companies in total) we went with Marvin Sky and his team. One of the reasons we chose him was because he's not a big company with lots of conversions going on at the same time. Therefore we felt reassured that we'd have the same project manager and tradesmen on the build consistently. something we'd learned from a neighbours bad experience. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions (in building terms) I've ever made. They were brilliant and a pleasure to have around. Superb customer service, worked hard, nothing was ever a problem, they always left the place tidy and totally security conscious. We ended up with a fantastic loft bedroom and wet room, well beyond our initial expectations.

Marvin came on board from the very beginning and helped us with getting planning approval from both Dulwich Estates and Southwark Council. I'd highly recommend Marvin as have other forum users who've also had loft conversions through his company - 07966 189 754

Certainly agree with Loz about avoiding the specialist loft companies - they are just playing the numbers game and once they've got the sale, you may or may not have a good experience. I'd always go for a decent builder who's well known in the area with lots of local references.

Marvin also did a loft conversion for me in Heber Road. Top job and a top bloke. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and his team.

    • Unless you accept the overwhelming evidence that 90% of motorists think the rules of the road don’t apply to them then all I really hear from you is “Waa Waa people I hate are doing something I do”
    • Has anyone tried to take a van to Southwark's recycling centre recently? It seems every year they try to make it more difficult. You now need to give 3 days notice, are limited to 4 trips per year and the latest wheeze is limiting van users to a one hour slot in the morning, timed to coincide with rush hour and the school run: https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/recycling/recycling-centres/reuse-and-recycling-centre/?chapter=2 Van access is restricted to 8.30am and 9.30am on the date you have selected when booking. You must complete all unloading and leave the site during this time. This is due to vans generally taking much longer to unload and can obstruct or cause hazards to other site users because of their larger size. This is bizarre as a different page says that The busiest times are on Saturdays, Sundays and at the start and end of each day. You may have to queue if you visit during these times. There's usually no queue between 10am to 3pm on weekdays. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/recycling/recycling-centres/reuse-and-recycling-centre How can they claim to be worried about hazards to other users then force van users to visit at the busiest times? Living in a carfree household and relying occasionally on Zipcars, a majority of which seem to be (Zip)vans in the ED area now, these changes seem as unnecessary as they are annoying. But I only visit the centre once or twice a year, maybe others have different experiences and views?
    • Who are the new managers, and what changes have they made? I haven't been in there for years!
