The Boundary Commission for England (www.bcereviews.org.uk is proposing changes to redraw parliamentary constituencies across the country. There are major changes for Camberwell voters with the Commission recommending approx. a third of Camberwell joins Vauxhall to become ?Vauxhall and Camberwell?, and nearly two-thirds of Camberwell being absorbed into Peckham.

We already have a situation with no single MP exclusively focused on Camberwell, with areas represented around the SE5 borders by three other MPs and the majority of residents sitting in ?Camberwell and Peckham?. If this proposal goes ahead, when the next General Election comes, our interests as a community will now be severely divided. The risk is that investment, for jobs, for transport and other benefits will be increasingly diverted to town centres of Vauxhall, Brixton, and Peckham, and we will be overlooked.

Our response

The SE5 Forum for Camberwell, The Camberwell Society, Camberwell Arts and the Camberwell Identity Group believe that this breakup of the Camberwell community is unacceptable. For example, this proposal will see the Camberwell School of Arts, King?s College Hospital, Camberwell Grove, Camberwell Grove, Camberwell New Rd, Denmark Hill Station and Burgess Park become part of Peckham.

This is yet another example of how Camberwell?s identity is being eroded in subtle but additive ways. We already lie on the boundary between councils and, as a result, often lose out on funding opportunities.

We understand this process is important to even up the numbers of each constituency. But we know how important the recognition of home as a place is. That ?sense of place? influences us in many ways as an individual, and as a member of a community. Camberwell is home to over 40,000 people with thousands more employed, studying and visiting. It is a real neighbourhood. We have a strong cultural mix, and rich history, which makes it a great place to live. We are proud to call our home Camberwell.

The Boundary Commission has an obligation to recognise communities and try and keep them together. We will submit a response to the Boundary Commission proposal on the 2nd August 21. We will be asking that it reconsiders the current proposal and recognises Camberwell, as defined by the postcode SE5, as a community.

Call to action

If you feel the same, then please sign our petition, so together we can ask the Commission to ensure we keep Camberwell together.

I'm sorry, but the local government for the old borough of Camberwell will remain under Southwark (whether we like it or not). The impact of this Parliamentary Constituency boundary change is broadly irrelevant to local Camberwell issues, save that in future there may be 2 MPs who can be called upon to raise issues at a Parliamentary/ Ministerial level and not one.

There may be reasons to challenge the proposals, but further damage to Camberwell local government is not one. It will remain unchanged. Camberwell will stay in Southwark, in its entirety, and Southwark will continue not to listen to 'South Southwark' issues.

Oh dear, after reading all this paraphenalia, I don't think I could commit myself to signing anything on-line let alone off-line with regard to Southwark Council. They are not supporting the government at the moment.

Helen Hayes had her say in the Southwark News today and as usual she was allowed to exert her views in a local newspaper which has become very anti government.

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you. • ''He caused chaos  in this country with his put down of everything British and his many dismal words about the effects of Brexit on this country.'' What utter tosh. Carney had to mitigate the effects of Brexit caused by plastic patriots like Farage. For example, immediately after the 2016 Brexit vote the BoE had to intervene fiscally by dropping interest rates and increasing QE in order to prevent the economy from taking a big hit.  They were unable to prevent the £ from crashing at the time, and it has since been worked out that the effect of that alone caused a circa £900/year hit to each UK household, which equates to the UK @ £450m/week.   There's reams of data out there that shows the economic damage Brexit has caused to the UK. Here's one looking at business investment, admittedly not very sexy but kinda important if you want to achieve economic growth. It's clear to see that prior to 2016 we had reached parity with some of our main rivals, but since then we've flatlined. All that Brexit has achieved is to win the race to the bottom. There's a reason why Farage never brought up Brexit at the last election, he knows himself it hasn't delivered on any of the promises, quite the reverse in fact.  Labour, stupidly, by saying they can make Brexit work have in effect given Farage a Get Out of Jail Free card...
