I think petrol is sold by the litre, so is around ?1.30 per litre, approx ?5.80/?6.00 a gallon which puts the fuel cost at just under ?90, even if you take your own sandwiches and drinks.

As Renata says there are some real bargains on LNER at the moment.

There are bargains advertised (tickets from ?5 it says on the website) but the cheapest ticketing I can actually find is ?146 - and there's only 4 left at that price! The cheapest car hire I can find is now ?146.50 but you can only get a Fiesta, plus ?90 petrol (thank you peckhamside for looking after my wallet) - so, if you've left it this late, the train is definitely the answer.

@paddyp7 - I wish your daughter the very best of luck in her studies! I'm sure she'll have an absolutely fantastic time in Newcastle. And best of luck with logistics.

    • Well thanks for enriching the conversation.  Would you chuck Fah - rage in too for his tax avoidance on his property?   I expect it was lead story on Jeremy Vine too.  Doesn't make it a story, just a bit more of BBC tabloid style sensationalism.  There are numerous real news stories in the UK and across the world.  And now, apt for Halloween, you have summoned up the ghost of Louisa. So for the third time, will you now eat humble pie?
