Sash Windows

HI

I have 4 sets of very old sash windows and the wood around them is getting old and soft in parts and of course they are single glazed, but i'd hate to replace them for modern windows - does anyone know a good way of restoring them / double glazing but keeping them in the original sash style?

Thanks

You can be double glazed timber sash windows but they cost thousands- I mean for a whole 3-bed Victorian terrace with double bays at the front it can easily cost 15k. If the double glazing isn't that important to you, you can have them restored. We did that we we bought our place and it cost roughly 250 per window (no bays) for the repairs. That combined with draft proofing and shutters made a big difference. If double glazing isn't a top priority, I will ask my husband who we used and PM you the details.

I had a very good company based in Bath replace my arched sash windows in a Victorian terrace for completely new ones, double glazed, with integral draft excluders and looking EXACTLY like the originals. The workmen had to stay in the flat for a week (while I vacated it to give them every opportunity to finish the work quickly) and everything was done really well and cleanly. go to www.sashconsultancy.co.uk

Dear Vikki O,

You can restore your sash windows very easily. I restored my sash windows, around the same number, actually. The boxes around the sashes were repaired and new sashes were made for them with double glazing. About 700? per window would leave you with new restored boxes, brand new sashes [absolute replica] with double glazing and new weights, draftproofed working sashes. Beautiful, basically. I used https://www.joineryworkshop.com although I'm in Derbyshire, they have a franchise for London https://www.london.joineryworkshop.com Hope you don't mind the plugs, but they saved my windows bacon. :) Ha

Good luck with your windows, Vikki. William.

    • Hello, My son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD.  We are hoping to find a tutor who themselves was diagnosed with ADHD (prior to Alevels ideally) and received help with studies.   The subjects are physics and Economics A level (he's starting Y13). At  present we want to see if we can find a tutor with the diagnosis first and if that doesn't work, then someone who has experience helping kids with ADHD succeed.    If that doesnt work either, then 2 subject specific tutors.  Please do DM me if you can help, or give a pointer for a good direction!   Thanks!   MattH

    • Have you considered PIV - positive input ventilation. We retro fitted a Soler & Palau super quiet in-line fan system. This takes cool air from the outside ans is ducted into the loft. It is really quiet and very efficient. It is controlled by a reverse thermostat ie one which shuts the system off when the temperature drops to a set level. We are very pleased with it especially as it costs a fraction of a/c and provides greater flexibility in terms of location of vents and ducting.
