Well I like my comedians delivering comedy, not just trying to play to a political gallery. Stewart Lee is for those that like their comedy delivered in the form of a badly mumbled political lecture. It's like we never learnt anything from the Ben Elton era.

I kind of see both sides of the Stewart Lee thing.

He's clever, interesting, incisive and amusingly acerbic, but there aren't that many moments where he's actually funny as such, let's not even mention the 'sketches' eek.


A bit like Rory Bremner's satirical 'comedy' in that respect. Though Bird and Fortune can crack me up, especially when they crack up themselves.

The attempts at a TV format has always been problematic though. They're like bite-sized, watered-down chunks taken from a meticulously crafted two hour show - the parts of which all come together to make something quite unique - and yes very, very funny. But 'the funny' builds as you go. Because if you want to say something clever, interesting, incisive, acerbic - and make it funny - then machine-gunning the audience with hilarious one-liners in the first ten minutes is not going to cut it - and TV is never going to be your friend in that respect.



So if you're 'interested' but haven't seen a full show, you should go. It's seriously impressive stuff. (Unless you hate Stewart Lee - in which case you'll only hate him even more).

If I want rib tickling, I go to see the chuckle brothers ( and yes, they are contemporary masters of their own very traditional genre)- if I want to think a bit, then Stewie ( as well call him ) is teh king


If you dont find his widely Utubed sketch "Emigrants" quite wonderful, then maybe its time to get the latest Micheal Macintire DVD into your amazon basket

I can see how that could be inferred.

Also I do actually like him.

SJ introduced me via one of the taped live shows years ago, and I laughed, sometimes out loud, especially the scottish paedophiles bit.

It's just the overall effect is one less of comedy than cleverly couched demagoguery with a vague air of mirth, so I was just saying I totally understand people who say he's funny and people who say he's not.

I'd be disappointed if you didn't!


Totally understand why he's not for everyone, but it's the loathing I find weird. You'd be forgiven for thinking there were hundreds of Stewart Lees up and down the land, adorning every panel show: not one with a very limited and avoidable television presence.


I expect it's probably got something to do with people going on and on and on and on and on about him until you just can't stand it any more..

Dick Emery has the same effect on a lot of people...

Something other than a list of gags Monkhouse/Vine style and I'm fine with it when it's Stewart Lee or Mark Thomas or a Brooker style rant but do seem to mind it a lot more when it's Mark Steel or Jeremy Hardy ... it's just a style thang.


Like the "I'm so kooky Fish banana Trousers!" approach of Noel Fielding - i USED to like it but it got old v. fast - it's not enough to just be odd - I just wish someone would tell Paul Foot that.



ETA: re Woody's post - I get why something like Miranda exists - I can see where it fits - just like that sitcom with the glasses one from mel and sue, but Mrs Browns What the fuck?! A wormhole connecting to 1974 is the only explanation.

Besides if you want real comedy Ben & Holly's little Kingdom is far and away the best thing around.

actually thinking about it, SJ can't have introduced me to him as I used to watch Fist of Fun and This Morning with Richard Not Judy.

Though I think it was Richard Herring's whiney desperation to be loved that really struck a chord!!

      I completely agree with you . Its as if they have their foot in the door and are just pushing and pushing. It's ridiculous. It's not the right space. they clearly do not give any regard to the environment or they would move it.

      There's a great badminton club at the Harris girls academy. It runs Friday from 5.30 to 6.45. for more experienced players, they have sessions on Wednesday and Friday, too but that's subject to skill levels

      There seem to be all sorts of blocks for this event being mounted on the Common, one is that it was 'designed especially' for the current site, though the organisers seem to have had absolutely no problem rejigging their plans to the original site footprint to expand the event to what we had last year- which I think really imposed on a large part of the park and spoilt the feel. I would suggest pressing very hard for relocation to the Common ( also closer to transport links). There must be a way, surely? If not, then wholesale relocation to a more suitable venue. I just do not think the park should be subjected to a festival-goer footfall of 60,000 plus over the summer.

      I absolutely will. Fed up of property developments that are funded from offshore investors and price out local people. Fed up of the demise of social rents and the growing crisis of families in bed and breakfast. Fed up of young people being unable to save deposits, start families and generally have the same security of tenure that previous generations had. So yes, I will drill down into the financing, affordability, where the properties aer being advertised for sale, and how many are genuinely for social rent. Otherwise, no opposition to redeveloping that site in that way.
