Hi,

Have been debating this evening with my 13 year old and would like to get other parents opinions please:

1. What time does your 13 year old go to bed on:

A) school night

B) weekend/holiday

2. How much screen time (tablet/phone/Mac/Tv) does your 13 year old have per day?

3. Do you have any general ?rules? around the house?

Thanks in advance!

Bedtime by 9pm, quiet time/reading encouraged from 8.30pm. During holidays/special occasions occasionally a little later.

Screen time: 45 mins games/videos, 1 hr phone, 40 mins TV. Screen for school work or reading unrestricted.

No particular rules but the home is very small so we can usually see what everyone's doing.

12 year old here

1. bedtime is 9.30pm on a school night, any time between 10 and 11pm other times (she's always been a night owl).

2. I try to limit screen time during term but it runs a bit amok at other times, but I try to limit the iPad (which will be mainly watching drivel on YouTube) to around an hour. There are limits built in. Not so fussed about gaming or TV. Doesn't do much on her phone.

3. Rules - not much really - no personal screens before homework finished in the week/after dinner in the week. I never had house rules growing up, but was pretty well behaved (I think!).

14 year old here. We obviously run a very lax household:

1. No actual rules on bedtime but she tends to take herself off to bed at around 10pm-ish every night.

2. Hours on end! She uses it to watch musicals on YouTube, chat to her very niche circle of musical-mad friends on Discord, play games and make artwork using drawing software (she's not interested in Instagram/TikTok, thank God). We don't limit it and I do trust her as she's pretty sensible.

3. She and her sister take turns to hoover the whole of the downstairs floor once a week and clean their bathroom. They also take turns to make their packed lunches every night, ready for the next morning. That's about it.
