Cycle lockers at East Dulwich station (Lounged: cycle security generally)

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if these are secure and a good thing, as if so have thought of finding out how to get them to put some at Nunhead station.

Recently left my rusty old bike, bought for ?20, with both wheels locked up, and got back late only to find someone had filched the saddle. I would take my bike into town but I just can't carry it up the Nunhead station stairs mountain.

Used to do it daily but that was 15 years, one serious illness and two stones ago.

You are right though it is surprisingly easy to get about by bike, even for me. It's just that I'm not convinced I could hack it back down the Old Kent Road at end of long working day. I think it may be safer for the faster cyclist, not she who takes a while to speed up!

Two groups to talk to about getting cycle lockers installed: London Cycling Campaign and Southwark Cyclists who should be able to point you in the right direction.

We had cycle lockers at my last work place and they're great - but be sure to also lock your bike to the inside of the locker, as one locker was broken into and the bike just taken out.

Ta for advice.

Mr/Ms Asset - I have emailed the locker people and awaiting response. I was wondering tho' as per Pandora comment below, whether any thief/vandal so driven they will steal an old saddle would also try to break into the lockers. Whole area seems to be littered with corpses of broken bicycles still securely locked but with missing wheels/bits.

SteveT - I never thought of that, and now can't work out why didn't occur before. And they say exercise sharpens the brain. Only thing is I would have to source a very thin chain to loop through saddle support as they are quite shallow - do you manage to lock through your saddle and if so can you kindly point to where to get thin enough but still secure chain?

Pandora - thanks for links and steer about security of lockers.

SQ, a quick visit to a decent bike shop will provide you with many security items such as cables for your saddle rails (not chain - lighter and less damaging to your bike) to spend your cash on. LCC also provide free cycle maps, so an alternative quiet route can be found. IMO cycling is about the quality of the ride, sometimes more so than the shortest A to B, and as Asset says it really won't take you long to get a bit fitter each time and those extra stones will disappear. I am a very experienced cyclist but I would avoid the OKR if I could.

Look for the thread here about 'Who Cycles To Work Form East Dulwich' (sorry, don't know how to do link thingy).

Good luck - you can do it!

I purchased a lock from the science museum shop it had a cable the thickness of a brake cable and it had a nubered code not a key.

But you could buy a cheap lock with a large enough hoop to slip your chain through and leave it locked and dangling from the saddle permanently.

    • Two local ‘High Streets for People’ events happening today: - Southwark celebrates High Streets for People On Saturday 21 June, Southwark Council is bringing residents, families, communities and businesses together to celebrate our High Streets. On Bellenden Road, Peckham, there will be a community event from 11am to 4pm with children’s games, face-painting, live music including a samba band and DJs, food from local businesses, cycling activities and much more. The road will be temporarily shut to vehicles between Danby Street and Choumert Road from 7am to 7pm, with buses diverted during this time to make space for community and family activities. Councillor James McAsh, Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets and Waste, said: “What a great way to celebrate the first day of Summer! Streets for People is about putting people first — making our neighbourhoods places where communities can connect, businesses can thrive, and everyone can enjoy cleaner air and safer streets.” Partners in the event include Bellenden Road businesses, London Play, Peddle my Wheels, JoyRiders, Community Cycleworks, the London Samba Band, OurBike, Poetic Unity. North Cross Road market will also be extended on Saturday 21 June, with extra traders taking part. Vehicle access will be restricted up to Lacon Road between 8am and 5pm to accommodate this. Local communities are also organising a number of play streets and street parties to mark the start of summer. The council has approved 18 road closures in June and July, allowing communities to enjoy their streets without traffic for the day. All these activities support Southwark’s Streets for People strategy, which seeks to make streets across the borough cleaner, greener, safer and more welcoming.  Investments are being made in walking and cycling routes, improved air quality, and creating more space for community use. Find out more at www.southwark.gov.uk/highstreetsforpeople As part of its commitment to do something each year that brings residents, community groups and businesses together to take climate action, Southwark Council has also arranged a number of free events as part of London Climate Action Week. • It does seem a common business strategy these days. River Island has just announced a similar restructuring: closing 33 shops and demanding that the landlords of a further 71 locations take a haircut.
    • If anyone has any spare tickets for Crystal Palace on Sunday let me know!
    • The tenant's business has already failed. If the landlord doesn't accept it, they can have a vacant property, stand in the queue of creditors, and get paid little or nothing. It's a gamble that the restructuring will work and the tenant will start paying rent again. Commercial properties are often hard to let. 🤷
