Cherry Tree Pub on Grove Vale NEWSFLASH

Tonight, Thursday 21st April CLOSURE

?Pub Closed due to Kitchen Gas Leak?

Hmmm. Sure that?s not because of no customers due to stratospheric prices?🧐🧐🧐

Only joking? love the cherry tree especially staff members Will & Leo, really top guys!πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Alternatives:

East Dulwich Tavern

Lordship Lane roundabout 2 minutes further down Grove Vale

Or

The Fox on the Hill Wetherspoon

42 bus get off Champion Hill

185, 176, 40, 484 bus get off Denmark Hill

Hope Cherry Tree reopens soon

Management: Maybe an opportunity to reduce those prices a bit? 😜

Happy Drinking EDF-ers πŸ»πŸ»πŸ™‚

If you had any idea of the sh*t show that is hitting pubs at the moment you might be more sympathetic.

All the goods they sell have rocketed in price

Staff are very hard to find so simple economics means those costs have also risen

Rents up

Utilities - probably doubled at least if not tripled

Please support your locals pubs - believe me they are not taking the proverbial but are trying to keep their heads above water......

They do not have anything like the resources of Wetherspoons and co.

I was in the Angel Oak and it was definitely open

Strangely no Camden Hells.

False closure theory

Well my friend who lives opposite cherry tree told me NO British Gas vehicle or trade vehicle or emergency vehicle turned up there Thursday or Friday morning whatsoever. His window FACES the pub.

Reopened Friday as normal.

Curious & curiouser.

Prices

Of course breweries are facing huge cost pressures but this applies to all pubs & bars. As of today Saturday the Cherry Tree is completely empty - Sat 1740hrs - whereas at the exact same time the EDT is overflowing with drinkers filling all outside seating. They don?t charge anywhere near as much so make your own conclusions.

The then landlord was not popular on here for many good reasons.

Including fake posts on here bigging up his own pub and slagging off other local pubs.

"Crushed and devalued" was how the fake poster described s/he (not sure which, his wife was also involved) felt after visiting another local pub, can't remember which one.

It was a running joke on the forum for a time.

Then there was a lovely couple who were really turning the pub around, and also brought in a really excellent chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree.

The aforementioned unpopular landlord (who unfortunately at that time also owned the pub) did not seem to like someone else bringing in more customers than he had, and he kicked them out.

Either he also kicked out the excellent chef or the chef left in protest/solidarity, can't remember which.

There was then a load of further argy bargy and mudslinging on here.

Oh those were the days 🀣

Then eventually Mr Unpopular sold the pub. Sighs of relief all round.

But as regards the EDT, I suspect the problem is not just pricing but location. Also the EDT is just generally a nicer pub, in my opinion. The main advantage The Cherry Tree has is its garden.

Crikey, well done ianr, I thought all those old posts were lost when the forum was updated!

Yes, that's it!

The landlord was also a grumpy man with an unpleasant manner, and the ale was not well kept. But if you complained about the crap beer, you were told there was nothing wrong with it.

I've just re-read that whole thread. It's so funny. And nostalgic. All those old forum names!

Well after much consideration my own personal opinion is that the ?Gas Leak? single day temporary closure, on the evidence, WAS a lie. That is most likely because of plain & simple discrimination against the Traveller Community.

If I can be shown evidence from a gas engineer/ fire brigade to the contrary, I?ll happily change my opinion.

That being said a business telling lies to the public? looks like the new manager isn?t much better.

?Gas leak? sounds a bit of a fake excuse. Why not just say ?Temporary Closure. Apologies?? Why the disrespectful silly lies? Makes you wonder what else they?re up to, hey? what goes on out of sight, before your drink &/or food gets brought out.

😱😱😱 eek!

A pub manager told me it was because of a travelers funeral. Anti traveler bigotry-the last socially acceptable racism. Had it been a black or Asian or LGBT funeral that would have broken race relation law/anti discrimination law.

Was this socially acceptable racism or landlords? fear of trouble and cost of damage ?

Reason this seems an obvious question is if you?re a landlord after a harsh pandemic, with running costs rising weekly, would you seriously turn down the chance of selling 100?s of additional drinks just cos you?re not a fan of a particular demographic ?

Sounds like bad business husbandry if that?s your sole reason, and time to find another trade !

    • OMFG is it possible for the council to do anything without a bunch of armchair experts moaning about it? The library refurb is great news, as it's lovely but completely shagged out - the toilets don't even work reliably. Other libraries in the area will be open longer house during the closure. July is a rubbish time to begin a refurb because it's just before the entire construction sector goes on summer holiday, and it would mean delaying the work another 8 months.
