I have a pretty serious back injury which resulted in a cracked and compacted lumbar vertebrae. I've had loads if Physio and manage it by keeping my core muscles really strong. When I slide and stop doing the exercises the pain becomes excruciating again and I need to go back on pain killers.

The exercises I find most effective are crunches and twist crunches along with side and gentle back exercises. I did try massage and acupuncture in the past but it didn't help at all.

I was told in 2001 that if I carried on doing Taekwondo and circuits etc I had a high chance of ending up in a wheelchair and was booked in for spinal surgery but 12 years later and without the surgery I'm still doing a lot of sport.

I'd definitely recommend lots if Physio over pretty much anything else.

Chiropractor. I suffered from back/neck pain from the age of 13 until my early 20s, having been sent to physios, given stretches to do, painkillers etc. I finally found my way to a chiropractor and after 6 weeks of treatment have never had the same problem again.

Any time I feel a small niggle in my back, pelvis or neck I to straight to Daniel Harvey and one treatment sorts it out.

And the type of Chiropractic treatment I would highly recommend is Wendy Watson or others who practice MCTIMONEY CHIROPRACTIC at the Dulwich Therapy Rooms above the health shop on Lordship Lane. Next to Mr Moo on the left as you walk up from the roundabout.

I have suffered a few knocks of the ol' motorbike over the years and they put me straight. But more importantly I go about 3 times a year for a top up to straighten me out and align everything perfectly. And yes she gives you exercises if necessary to help keep things strong. Good luck!

Hi there,

I am an Amatsu practitioner based in East Dulwich and I specialise in working to reduce pain and improve movement in clients who usually have tried a few other approaches first. Amatsu is a highly effective Japanese approach to health and wellbeing. I am very successful at working with all types of pain including back pain. If you would like to speak to me please call 07841 918899 or go to my website www.lornaclansey.com for some more information.

Best wishes

Lorna

I wouldn't recommend acupuncture from personal experience. Know it sounds rubbish but walking is very good for lower back problems. Would also try stretches, arching back/bottom forward but gently to start. Whatever you choose remember more damage can be done so be carful.

    • I’m currently conducting exploratory research into menstrual health education in UK secondary schools and would really value the insight of PSHE leads, Heads of Year, or pastoral staff.    The research aims to understand:   How the menstrual cycle is currently taught within the RSHE framework Where schools feel confident — and where there may be gaps Whether students are taught and  asking questions around the full menstrual cycle, symptoms, wellbeing and conditions such as PMS/PMDD or endometriosis How schools support students in feeling empowered to understand their bodies and seek help appropriately Whether education around nutrition, lifestyle, and menstrual wellbeing is currently addressed   The long-term goal is to explore whether there is a need for additional, age-appropriate, medically informed support on the menstrual cycle.  I’m not selling a programme and there is no obligation beyond a 30 minute informal chat online (Unpaid). All conversations will be confidential and used only to inform the research. If you work in a UK secondary school and would be willing to share your perspective, I would be extremely grateful to hear from you. Please comment below or email me [email protected] Thank you for the vital work you do. Best wishes, Emma
