.....And another well deserved recommendation for John and Gabi Marx.  He just fitted an IKEA kitchen for me and they helped me through the whole process as I have never had a new kitchen before. Any issues along the way were raised and a solution agreed and some minor snagging issues were dealt with very promptly and on a Sunday too ! The attention to detail is impressive and he really knows what he is doing. I dreaded this project but was more than happy with my decision to use John and Gabi and the quality of the kitchen fit.

John from Top Marx Kitchens installed my kitchen in February 2022, so this review is a long coming!
Just to reiterate the comments above, it was a pleasure to deal with Gabi who, despite having to have very similar conversations every day, didn't dampen my excitement for my new kitchen.

I found John to be super hard working, friendly and very knowledgeable. My kitchen was from DIY kitchens and I bought a broom cupboard which was basically the wrong size (my fault). John in his wizardry somehow made it work! In addition to being very skilful, I was comfortable with having him in my home. And as a single woman, that's something I appreciated.

A year later, I'm still in awe of my new kitchen. Having renovated other parts of my period property with its wonky walls, floors etc., I still marvel at how seamlessly John made this installation seem, although in hindsight, I can see that some parts would have been quite tricky. My recollection was that there was a bit of a wait as John and Gabi had a number of advance bookings. However, the wait was definitely worth it.

We have recently completed our kitchen refit with John/Top Marx.

We contacted them at the start of the year on the strength of the recommendations here, knowing that our project wouldn't start until later in the year, but wasn't a problem. Gabi responds to every communication warmly and promptly, and quickly arranged a site visit from John to help us with our planning.

As it was our first ever kitchen project it was really daunting, but John was happy to chat to us and answer questions and left us feeling so reassured. We got a very reasonable quote quickly and secured Top Marx for our dates within just a couple of weeks. If we would have had to wait for availability we would have, but we seemed to have got in early.

Our old kitchen was ripped out on a weekend so trades could make a start on the Monday. We were pleased to still be able to use our own electrician, gas engineer etc. A delay with a plasterer wasn't an issue despite pushing things back by a week.

Once fitting started John dealt amazingly with working in our tiny space, and all the issues related to our drastically wonky floors and walls. He built us an amazing boiler cupboard, to our own design/spec, despite it being more work than expected. John reiterated many times that giving us the kitchen we wanted was his top priority, and was generally a pleasure to have around to chat to.

During the job John spoke about going to do bits and bobs on previous projects, and helping investigate issues in kitchens he had fitted (that we're not his fault). John will also be coming back to us soon to swap the dishwasher door (manufacturing fault). I have no doubt that if any other issues arise the after service will be exceptional 👌

Another kitchen fitter recommendation here for John Marx at Top Marx Kitchens! Very professional and completed to a high standard start to finish. He gave us great advice and worked around a measurement mishap from the kitchen supplier, no issues. We felt comfortable having him in our home. On the organisational side, email communication is handled by his wife Gabi – responsive, very clear and again very professional, giving us confidence in the project. Thank you both so much! Would also highly recommend the electrician we worked with, who was a recommendation from John – Gary Vu. He was great.

Yet another recommendation for John and Gabi at Top Marx kitchens. Our very old built in fridge freezer broke and we could not find a suitable replacement that would fit the space.  John was able to come round very quickly and advise on the best course of action.  He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, timely and responsive....and a very nice guy.  Gabi is excellent at keeping the momentum going with booking appointment times etc.  I have no hesitation in recommending Top Marx Kitchens.

Can't recommend john (and Gabi) more highly. John has done a fantastic job fitting an IKEA kitchen - as well as bespoke cabinets. Both Gabi and John are responsive, professional, patient and knowledgable. From start to finish, everything was great. John went above and beyond to solve all issues that cropped up during the job and works to a very high standard - with attention to detail and everything left immaculately afterwards.  contact them on [email protected]

Just wanted to add another recommendation for John and Gabi at Top Marx Kitchens. This was my first time managing a kitchen reno and they made the whole process smooth and stress free. John was a pleasure to have in the flat, was super helpful and had fantastic attention to detail. Hiccups along the way were dealt with, John was so generous and helpful. I’m so happy with the finished result! Communication throughout the job was great, get in touch with Gabi and John at [email protected] 🙂

Here are a few snaps of our lovely new kitchen fitted by John! 🙂

From the rip out to the installation and snagging, John was incredibly professional, considerate and professional with brilliant attention to detail. He is clearly very knowledgeable, and was able to offer suggestions and make tweaks with ease when my odd Victorian building threw us curveballs.

Gabi provides an incredible level of support and reassurance, replying promptly to all queries and concerns. As a team they are incredibly well organised, and both dates and costs are clear.

John has a great relationship with Howdens, securing me a great discount on the kitchen, and sorting any issues that arose quickly and calmly. After dealing with a number of aggressive workmen who overcharged me and turned up as and when they wanted, John and his team were an absolute breath of fresh air; friendly, courteous, hardworking and reliable.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Top Marx to anyone looking to have a new kitchen installed, I truly could not be more thrilled with the results!

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of John and Gabi's kitchen fitting services. We were doing a significant renovation which required fitting of cupboard doors along with bespoke wooden cabinet finishings such as plinths. John was able to cut and fit anything and adapt to our changing needs without any fuss.

As John stated numerous times this could not have been done without the assistance of Gabi, ensuring dates and times lined up.

We are extremely happy with the service provided and would not hesitate to use them again.

5/5

    • Callout for help from any local experts here. Looking to find out more about the history of the property on the corner of Whateley Road and Ulverscroft road (with the green glazed bricks). Now a residential property, i'm told it was a bottle shop in days gone (the house was built around 1900) by and i'd like to learn more about the history of the business that was once here - name, photos, anything at all really! Seems to be very little from open source research so i'm hoping anyone with history in the area can provide any insight!  Starting here before i contact Southwark Archives or similar orgs to get any information and pictures (any advice here also would be welcome). Thank you
    • Portable ramps are available for businesses to use in this sort of situation, aren't they? I don't know whether one would be suitable for use here, or whether they have the space to store one. Lots of people have  permanent or temporary disabilities which mean they have to use crutches or a wheelchair.
    • I can’t remember where I read that figure but this article in the Grauniad from 2023 discusses Ocado results from 2022. The average shopping cart fell to £118 from £129 the previous year. But Ocado lost £500m that year on approximately 20 million orders (circa 400k orders per week). So, averaging out to £25 lost per order. Ocado pauses building new warehouses as annual losses balloon to £500m | Ocado | The Guardian  Obviously, the £500m loss includes various factors. But Ocado has existed for 25 years and only made a small profit in a couple of those years. The rest have been huge losses. Yet it continues to raise funds and speculation sends the share price up and down. In that respect,  it’s like the UK version of Tesla. Meanwhile, the main growth in the supermarket sector has been for Aldi and Lidl, who do not deliver.
