Hi, I love playing backgammon and I realise I have not played much over the past decade or so.

I'm thinking of starting up a backgammon club at a local pub on a set day each month or something like that.

I used to organise tournaments at an old workplace of mine. Colleagues became obsessed in winning one of the four majors -- The Masters, The Open, the World Championship and the FIBA (Federation International de Backgammon Association). Each one was subtly different from the others!

Yes, I know....I'm a geek.

Anyway, just gauging interest or If anyone is interested in just meeting up to play, just let me know.

Best

Pan

This is a great start!

Thanks for your responses.

I think the best way to move forward is to just organise an evening in some pub and see who turns up and then we can discuss how to take it on.

I'll go and ask around to see if anyone objects to the sound of dice on board and come back with a date, I'm thinking starting off one evening during half-term, which starts on Monday, Feb 13.

Does anyone have any preferences re dates and re pubs.

Hi Pan.

Sounds good - I think the best place will be the castle. They have quite a large area at the back away from the bar that is empty usually with lots of table space. Rob should be fine with it and more then happy for us to play. I think they have Poker on a monday so maybe Tuesday is good. also the most affordable pub of east dulwich.

failing that, the plough also has lots of table space.

I will let you decide the plans though.

Thanks

More of a bridge man myself but backgammon is OK too although I haven't played for ages.

Used to be into chess as well but it's those away games where you have travel across London in the cold and dark to play for 4 hours only to blunder the game away in one move that put me off.

It is with great pleasure that I can confirm that the inaugural meeting of the East Dulwich Backgammon Club (henceforth EDBC) will take place at the East Dulwich Tavern (henceforth EDT) on the evening of Tuesday, the twenty-first of March (henceforth 21/03/23) from 1900 hours GMT (henceforth 7 p.m.).

The manager of said establishment is very excited about hosting this prestigious event.

I will bring a set; it's a classic Greek backgammon set. I can bring more if need be.

Please confirm availability. The first gathering will be a catch-up and discussing our plans. Hopefully by the third, we can start playing the first of the four annual majors!

Let's do this; it should be a lot of fun!

    • I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story. Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.   Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.    When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.  if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!
    • Another recommendation for Andy. I needed an old kitchen removed as an emergency. Andy came over quickly and did a fantastic job. I have used Andy a few times. He is punctual, helpful and always does an  excellent job.
