My laptop is telling me that the battery has reached the end of ts useful working life and I need to buy a new one.

I've only had the laptop for a couple of years and hardly ever use the battery as it's usually plugged into the mains.

Do any of you computer geeks out there know if it is a scam by Dell and I should ignore the message? Is it possible that I have ruined the battery by keeping it constantly hooked to the mains and rarely discharging it?

Quite likely. How long will it run on battery alone? I'm assuming normal time around 3 hours on power saver setting so anything less than an hour means it's buggered. Whatever you do, replace it with a proper battery not a cheap one from China as it will work out more expensive in the end.

    • the real question is what to do about it - who to hold accountable and who is actually willing to engage, or will it escalate to residents taking legal action, as with Brockwell Park last year? it could be worth connecting with their group, although I think they are Lambeth, joint forces may be more powerful.
    • I'm sorry to hear this - there is too much of this around. Your son did the right thing to let go of his possessions - I hope he's not too shaken up and certainly not taking it personally, or thinking he should have done something vigilante style like fighting back. We live very close by and are usually out in the evenings with the dogs - hardly ever see anyone so will take extra care from now on.
