Here's a timely comment from 'Plantlife' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22671186,

for those of us who'd like to see less Council time- and fuel- wasting & more enlightened management of grass verges and park edges around the place.

Also campaigning for the trees to be left alone whilst young birds fledge - please go to Councillor James Barber's thread if you would like to chime in on this.

The use of these machines that have such a negative impact is for one reason and one reason only - to save money. Most of the services that use the machines are privatised or out sourced to private profit making businesses, some very large indeed. To maximise profits the quicker the verge is strimmed/the leaves collected the less time you have to pay a wage/more work can be done. Thatcher started privatisation and the con dems continue it. Thats why rose beds in parks are no longer pruned but are sliced to a uniform height with a hedge trimmer. Privatisation/best value is a con with short term gain (that is false), and mid-long term damage with no recovery eg dead rose beds (extrapolate the rest).

Can I refer anyone interested in this topic across to James Barber's 'How Can I Help' thread, where I have posted about the illegal disruption currently being caused by tree surgeons etc, severely intruding on fledgeling birds in the Camberwell Old Cemetery.

Also can I emphasise the councillor should receive as many comments as possible on this and related nature issues. My major concern at present, as the weather heats up, to see short grass anywhere - because it is impossible to keep damp-loving amphibian creatures safely sheltered there in the daytime. There are too few refuges in the capital. Even though we are fortunate in having green space in ED it should be managed for fossil fuel reduction and biodiversity 100%. And left alone except for having a few pathways mown through, at least until late August.

    • I can't recommend Leon too highly.  He provides a first-rate service.  He's friendly but also professional.  He sorted out my extractor fan which  was running incessantly because another electrician had bodged it. At the same time he saved me buying a new shaver unit which had stopped working when the extractor wouldn't stop running. He was also uncomplaining about having to to go up and down 3 flights of stairs between the bathroom and the electrical power unit. He will definitely be my first port of call for any future electrical issues.  His contact number is: 07707 925039.

    • of course most people would avoid the "stupid" term - but I'm sticking with it fact is no other European would be so dumb, and even with the same information, the  same media, the same everything, 2 of the countries within the UK saw ho stupid an idea it was - but only the English (who played a large part in the Welsh result) pushed ahead - there is something defiantly arrogant and stupid and it isn't just down to bad info and bad leadership But that was all 2016 - it's people in 2025 who claim it to be a good idea executed badly who are especially stupid Now - does calling people stupid help anyone? It's not especially politically gainful and just gets peoples' backs up - but it remains a truth and only when the country as a whole genuinely holds it's hands up and admits the stupidity (rather than downplaying it as a poor decision - no shade meant Mal - you are just nicer and politer than me) will it begin. to turn the tide Also worth mentioning that yes I am as intractable and blunt with friends and family who voted Leave as well - this isn't me hiding behind some online anonymous account. This is what I'm like
    • Hello My name is Lizzie and I work locally as a dog walker and nanny. I won’t be needed over Summer so will have full availability for a dogsitting job. I have a DBS certificate and will provide several dogsitting references as well. Please note that I can only watch your pet at your home since they are sadly not allowed in my flat! Looking forward to hear from you
