bels123
The Department of Health has issued a high pollution alert for London tomorrow and Saturday meaning more people than average will have asthma attacks, strokes, heart attacks and suffer from breathing difficulties https://twitter.com/lb_southwark/status/1699721108872667351?s=20 If you can avoid it, please don't pollute the air we all share. 2 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/ Share on other sites

Sue
Sorry to be really dim, but where is the high pollution coming from if we are now in a ULEZ? Is it something to do with weather conditions? 5 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637516 Share on other sites
first mate
Bless you Sue. That is a brilliant question. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637523 Share on other sites

heartblock
It’s complex but this is a nice explanation https://www.londonair.org.uk/londonair/guide/SummerSmog.aspx 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637555 Share on other sites

alex_b
I was just about to start a thread about this. It smells like burning plastic around Goose Green this morning. march46
Fire at a waste transfer station in Herne Hill, likely to be highly polluting. It’s a horrible smell, we’ve just shut all our windows. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637581 Share on other sites
heartblock
Ugh... nasty 😷. Well I’m in the Shropshire hills right now and the air smells amazing, not looking forward to going back to smelly air today 🤨 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637583 Share on other sites

The less pollution caused by traffic, the better the air quality. 4 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637603 Share on other sites
Jellybeanz
I'd also assume that pollution is worsened when the weather is hotter and there is less breeze blowing about... Humid high temps definitely make it feel more difficult to breathe and the latest London bus design remains as rubbish as ever, with hardly any air circulating from the tiny windows. You'd think someone would have addressed by now - another great innovation in Boris the mayor's time. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637609 Share on other sites
Earl Aelfheah
Pollution is a problem. It's exactly why we need tougher measures, not to scrap the small controls we do have. That people would note poor air quality and use it to attack ULEZ is astonishing. Nigello
How can one be sure that particulates/tyre particles don’t mostly/somewhat/always/never come from miles or even many miles away? My point is that if the main culprit is not mostly vehicles inside ULEZ then what would be a valid reason for its introduction in said zone? Is it accurate to say X people die because Y number of vehicles are driven in Z zone? 4 hours ago, Jellybeanz said: I'd also assume that pollution is worsened when the weather is hotter and there is less breeze blowing about... The Boris buses were taken in to have sliding windows installed after complaints when they’d just been rolled out. It didn’t work as well as it could have. A big opening at the front of both decks would help push air through. Same problem on other models - no opening windows for a good portion of the front of top and bottom decjs. They let air flow freely through the bus and no design since has matched them. Best of all kids could pretend they were steering the bus using them 🤣 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332456-high-pollution-alert-southwark/#findComment-1637700 Share on other sites
