Had a Yahooo account for over ten years, the first decade without a problem. Now it has been hacked, e-mails seem to disappear, and the latest update (last weekend) is now almost unuable as the functionality has been drastically reduced with regards to sorting stuff and finding e-mails. A lovely touch is if I try and sort by sender if it is a commercial organisation they also bang an advert in. The functionality on my work machine is even worse, maybe due to bandwidth, firewall or just out of date browser.

Still has excellent spam filter though, so I always get a fun surprise where I see all those medical products that I can purchase when I check the Spam filter. Yahoo were good when I phoned through (eventually answered) and I got them to change the password. It also asked me to change the password a few times in the weeks after due to suspected attack.

The hack attack simply e-mailed everyone in my address book with the dodgy link. Not sure of any other purpose.

I have free Advast antivirus software, which did not warn me of a dodgy attachment. It was the sort of Daily Mail article that the supposed sender would send, if it had been from most other people I would have realised.

So (a) views on Yahoo mail

(b) on being hacked

© on other better? web based e mail

Google wasn't that helpful when I tried doing my own research.

PC is going to the doctors this weekend for a flush out, as I am paranoid that I am now a botnet

PS now made me delete 1000s of e mails, unsubscribe to commercial sites and clear up my address book.

Gmail all the way these days. yahoo has had alot of problems-

it just got dropped as the BT mail provider due to the amount of compromised accounts they were getting. alos get yerseld Kaspersky or simpair - 3 pcs licence for 20 quid and I have never had a problem with botnetism as long as you scan regularly.McAfee hogs your memory IME, so avoid that.

eta- install kasp and do a fullscan - remove all the other AV at the same time - you may find this fixes your prob and may avoid a trip to the pc doctors + expense

good luck!

    • The BBC is one of the finest, if not the finest, broadcasters in the world.  They have been admired by many across the world for their journalism.  There have been numerous arrests since their recent expose on convenience shops that cover ups for criminals - money laundering, contraband,  illegal workers and the like. By no means perfect and some of what they have done in the modern world is questionable - the website often comes across as tabloid or sensationalist, as do some of their documentaries, and at times it is full of low grade game shows, fly on the wall etc which bring the punters and money, including overseas, in but is not quality TV.  In their desperation for 'balance' they've given too much air time and credibility to some more extreme views, which contributed to Brexit and some of the rise in right wing parties.  I wish they'd say 'the convicted criminal' every time they talk about Yaxley Lenon. The programme was clumsy, why it didn't go through proper clearance including the lawyers, I don't know.  But it created zero stir at the time. Zero.  And had no impact on the election, so Trump has no case.  I hope they don't cave in like many of the US corporations and media.  Oh and well done to South Park using the small p*nis defence in ridiculing him. What I expect is as the Beeb is pretty centrist in it;s reporting in riles some of those who thrive on the toxic populism we have seen since Trump mark 1 and Brexit.  How sad.
